Eyebrows are one of your most important facial features! There’s a reason why the fashion trend community has terms that apply exclusively to eyebrows; such as ‘brow game on point’ or ‘brows on fleek’.

So, if you want some of that ‘on-point’ brow game, the first step is to learn the different ways to style your brows, and then to learn how to choose the best eyebrow style for your face.

Why Are Eyebrows So Important?

Eyebrows have a remarkable framing effect. They enhance the shape of your eyes and they express a lot of emotion too. When your eyebrows look good, you’ll look younger and more likeable. When left unkempt, you’ll seem surly and irritated.

Shaping your eyebrows allows you to accentuate or improve their natural appearance, and the right style can make all the difference!

Should Men Shape Their Eyebrows?

Shaping your eyebrows might sound like a very feminine thing to do, but almost every man can benefit from occasional maintenance, especially when he has thick and messy eyebrows.

Just remember that unnaturally thin brows on men can look a little bit odd, so be careful not to go overboard with the shaping.

Does The Right Eyebrow Shape Differ From Person To Person?

Yes! Every person has a particular eyebrow shape that works best for the shape of their face, as well as the shape of their eyes.

How To Shape Eyebrows

There are four main methods of eyebrow shaping. Each one has its own benefits and a certain level of complexity attached to it.

Plucking

Also known as tweezing, plucking is the simplest method of eyebrow shaping. It literally involves taking a pair of tweezers and plucking out unwanted eyebrow hairs. In general, when plucking, you only remove one or two rows of hairs.

Threading

Threading is an ancient method of eyebrow shaping that dates back centuries. It involves using a loop of twisted thread to pull hairs out of follicles. Threading can capture entire rows of hair at once and can also capture finer hairs that other methods miss. It also lasts longer than plucking and doesn’t hurt as much either.

Waxing

Waxing your eyebrows is similar to waxing any other part of your body. It involves layering wax on the area of unwanted hairs, placing a strip of cloth or paper over it, and pulling it out quickly. Having your eyebrows waxed is a super simple and effective way of shaping your eyebrows, but it does come with some pain and risk of skin irritation.

Microblading

Microblading is a permanent makeup technique that involves using a tool with several fine needles to deposit pigment into the layer beneath the skin. It basically tattoos several fine eyebrow-shaped lines onto your skin, and it’s perfect for people who have naturally thin eyebrows, or who don’t want the hassle of fixing their eyebrows all the time. Microblading needs special skills, and not just any random tattoo artist will do. Make sure to look up where to get the best microblading in your area.

Can You Shape Your Eyebrows At Home?

The most basic way to maintain your eyebrows is plucking, and that is definitely something that you can do in the comfort of your own home. For best results, pluck your eyebrows immediately after your shower, as your pores will be wide open and it’ll be easier to pull out the hairs.

For longer-term solutions, you have the option of threading or waxing your eyebrows, but these methods can get pretty complicated and it’s best to leave them to your stylist of choice. Of course, you can’t really perform microblading on yourself, so definitely save that for a permanent makeup expert.

The Best Eyebrow Shapes For Each Face Shape

1. For Square Faces: Straight, Thick Eyebrows

People with square-shaped faces, like Brooke Shields, will benefit from thick, clearly-defined, and linear eyebrows. Square faces are very angular and won’t benefit from brow shapes with a high arch.

2. For Square Faces: Medium Arches, Soft Angled, Thin

If you want a different, more angular look for your square face, you can take a look at Angelina Jolie for inspiration. She has a very square and angular face, so she doesn’t need to emphasise her facial features that much – instead, she has a more elegant, thin-browed look with medium arches and soft angles.

3. For Heart Shaped Faces: Rounded With Gentle Arches

Girls with heart-shaped faces look their best when they sport brows with gentler arches and rounded edges to match the contours of their larger foreheads. Natalie Portman is one of the most gorgeous examples of a heart-shaped face, and she has the brows to go with them.

4. For Round Faces: High Arches, Long Tail

Round faces are best served with bold, angled eyebrows. High arches and long tails are a big part of the look, as they can help elongate a round face and draw facial features upward, making them look sharper. The forever-gorgeous Drew Barrymore is a perfect example of this.

5. For Oval Faces: Thick, Soft Angles

Oval faces are similar to round faces, though slightly longer. Brow enthusiasts with oval faces, rejoice! They can wear pretty much any brows they’d like, as long as they’re not too pointy and thin. If you’re looking for a specific inspiration for an oval-shaped face, though, Cara Delevingne and her thick, bushy, soft angled brows never fail to impress.

6. For Oval Faces: Thick, High Arches

Oval-faced women looking to up their brow game may also take a page out of Megan Fox’s book. Her high arches and sharp angles draw attention to her smoky eyes and lengthen her face.

The Best Brow Game

While each eyebrow shape is well-suited to certain face shapes, that doesn’t mean that you don’t have any room to maneuver. You can also use your eyebrows to match your eye shape, whether you’ve got almond-shaped stunners or wide-eyed soul windows.

Just remember that eyebrows are very easy to get wrong, so be careful with your plucking and pencilling, and try to aim for a natural look.
