From pink to purple to midnight blue, and of course from dark brown to blonde, Nicole Richie has tried nearly every hair colour imaginable, and had the attendant hair damage that comes with.
So when the star felt the urge to go lavender again, she decided to take advantage of Joico’s new temporary bold dyes to add a set of pastel streaks to her blonde waves. We had questions and she was happy to answer to them.
“I’ve played with colour a lot with my hair and I did it three or four years ago, so really the only option was to use permanent color and it’s just a different process – bleaching your hair, you have to go to a salon and it’s a very big deal, and it’s a big commitment,” Richie tells PeopleStyle of the look. “I dealt with some breakage and had to start fresh and grow it out all over again.”
In order to “start fresh” back then, Richie had no choice but to cut her hair into a pixie, which she’s been growing out for the past two years. So she understandably wasn’t eager to go back to the beginning.
“When I met with Joico they wanted to show me their new temporary hair colour. My first thought was ‘Oh, this is so cool’ because you could do it at home, which I think is half the battle,” she said. “I think that a lot of people want to experiment with colour because it’s emotional and powerful and does have the power to uplift you and really change your vibe, your wardrobe, but it’s just such a big commitment.”
But the brand’s new temporary dyes, she says, are healthy — and don’t last much longer than a month or two. “This one comes out in 10 washes and there’s a conditioning aspect to the formula, so you wash it out and it actually leaves your hair very soft, so it actually kind of cures every issue that I’ve ever had with hair color.”
Aside from the upkeep, there’s another major challenge that comes with rocking a bold set of strands: getting dressed in the morning. So Richie says she goes for the look during times when she knows she’ll be wearing dark colors that won’t clash with her bright hair.
“Obviously, the colours that you could wear are a little more limited, but that’s why I like to play with that extreme colour in fall and winter, because I wear a lot of blacks and grays,” she says. “That’s the fun thing about colour – your hair can be your accessory for a few weeks.”
