How To Create The Perfect Minimalist Wardrobe

Darling, let's keep this simple …

So what is a minimalist wardrobe and how can you create one?

If you’re seeking wardrobe advice, take this cue from Queer Eye‘s fashion guru Tan France. Here’s what he shared with fashionjournal.com.au

“I would suggest a capsule wardrobe – a few simple items that are classic, that will be with you for the next 10-15 years. You’ll have to inject some other pieces, but on the whole, this will get you through:

  • A great pair of jeans – preferably a darker pair of jeans to go with everything in your closet.
  • A suit – whether it’s a pantsuit or a skirt suit. Something you can alternate, whether it be a skirt with a top, or a jacket with a jean.
  • A leather jacket – try a moto jacket, because they’ve been around for ages and they’ll make you look cool without even trying.
  • A heel – either nude or black, just a shoe that will go with anything.
  • A little black dress.

So, let’s get you dressed and ready for anything…

dark jeans

Dark Jeans

For the ideal minimalist closet you’ll need a pair of jeans that go with everything. There’s only one way to nail that one and that’s to find the perfect fit for your shape.

If you’re going to create a minimalist wardrobe it’s worth taking the time to find that perfect pair.

Jeans shopping is only painful if you’re not prepared, so take a t-shirt jacket and heels with you so you can test them out with different looks before buying.

According to France, the Moto jacket is a staple when it comes to minimalist clothing.

Boohoo and theiconic both have a range of affordable faux leather options but remember, this is about minimalism so don’t go buying more than one!

Business Suit

The great thing about having a suit in your minimalist wardrobe is that you can dress it down by wearing the jacket with jeans and the pants (or skirt) with a tshirt and white sneakers.

You’ll find a range of options at Marks and Spencer, Next and Saba.

For truly minimal clothing, stick to neutral colours: black, grey or navy for the best chance of mixing and matching with other essentials.

The same principle works for men.

nude heels

A pair of heels

You can take a leaf out of Anna Wintour‘s shoe closet on this one. Wintour is known for her classic style but she’s also been wearing the same Manolo Blahnik heels for decades.

Maybe not the exact same pair (she apparently gets sent a few pairs each season), but you could call the nude heel one of her basics.

Nude or black will go with everything so be like Wintour and invest in a pair you love so you can feel proud of your capsule wardrobe.

black dress

Little Black Dress

A little black dress doesn’t have to be little to be a closet essential. In fact, choosing something that crosses over from day to night will save you needing to buy more than one.

The Stella McCartney Short Sleeved dress as worn by Meghan Markle is a great place to start.

Jennifer Aniston is a big fan of the LBD and told InStyle magazine, “I love a little black dress. It’s a great, wonderful, fun, easy piece of clothing to have.”

So there you have it courtesy of Tan France, Anna Wintour and Jennifer Aniston.
