Beloved Australian comedian Cal Wilson has sadly passed away, aged 53.
“We are devastated to share the news that Cal Wilson, the much-loved stand-up comedian, writer, and actor died today, surrounded by family and friends after a short illness at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney,” read the statement released by her agency, Token Artists.
“Cal’s generosity, talent and friendship have been constants in the Australian comedy scene for the last twenty years. Cal was loved by her family, friends, fans and peers and a huge hole has been torn in the heart of our community.”
Known widely for her prolific career as a stand-up comedian, Cal starred on a number of beloved Australian television programmes, including Spicks and Specks, Good News Week, Would I Lie To You?, and Have You Been Paying Attention?
“Most recently, she co-hosted The Great Australian Bake-Off for Foxtel alongside Natalie Tran, which was in production when Cal was first admitted to hospital,” the statement continued.
“We are all completely devastated to lose such an amazing, vibrant person. Cal joined our Bake-Off cast last year and instantly brought her unique sparkle to the show,” Wendy Moore, Foxtel’s Group General Manager for Lifestyle, told news.com.au
“Her professionalism, work ethic, and genuine heart-warming humour instantly made her a favourite amongst cast and crew, as well as the Australian audience. We will all miss her so much, and our hearts go out to her family and friends.”
Originally from Christchurch, New Zealand, Cal made her journey to Australia in 2003; settling in Melbourne ahead of her breakout role in the comedy sketch show Skithouse.
For over 20 years, Cal was one of the most beloved personalities in Australian comedy, appearing 14 times at the Melbourne Comedy Festival before becoming a member of the Melbourne Comedy Festival Board of Directors.
Following the news of her passing, colleagues and friends from across the Australian comedy landscape took to social media to pay tribute to Cal and her lasting legacy.
“Most wonderful Cal. Most generous. Most excellent. A huge hole in the arts community and in my heart. I want to send courage and love to her family,” wrote Julia Zemiro.
“My heart is broken for her family and for everyone that has ever met her because she was amazing. Today is a terrible day, ” shared Urzila Carlson.
Cal’s cause of death is currently unknown. Her family have requested privacy at this time.
