Elyse’s well-meaning, but perhaps ill thought-out comments were made during an interview with A Conscious Collection on Wednesday for Earth Day.

‘While the spread of coronavirus has been devastating in countless ways, if we look for a silver-lining we’ll find the gift it’s given our planet,’ she said.

The Myer ambassador went on to list the benefits including cleaner air, ‘glistening’ beaches and rivers and wildlife enjoying ‘a safer home’

‘Mother Nature has proven to us all that by minimising the collective human footprint, our world can take a breath and re-set,’ she continued.

‘It’s ignited the fire in my belly to keep advocating for positive change! We have ONE world. We have to treat it with absolute care.’

However, many fans were quick to jump online to label the blonde’s comments as ‘idiotic’ and ‘insensitive’.

‘People have lost their lives. This is no gift from the planet. It’s a tragic illness killing thousands. Idiotic comments,’ one person wrote.

‘Tell that to the families of the 175,000 dead. Damn idiot,’ another person agreed.

Meanwhile, another person wrote: ‘So from Brunswick to Byron and now you’re an expert? Yes things have changed but at what cost? Clearly the human cost means nothing to you.’

Elyse also faced harsh criticism last month by sharing photos of her picture-perfect holiday on Queensland’s Moreton Island.

‘Magical week watching sunrise to sunset,’ she wrote next to a picture of herself relaxing at the beach in a bikini with her boyfriend, Josh Barker.

‘Camping with loved ones and embracing nature. No earlier ferries so we embraced being near no one. Time to hit the road before the borders close,’ she added.

While the 27-year-old clearly meant no harm, many of her followers hit out at the ‘tone deaf’ nature of her post.

‘Really? Posting this when people are losing their jobs, we are all self-quarantining and trying to stop a virus from spreading?’ one person commented.
