What To Consider When Planning Kids’ Parties In Sydney

Date & Time

Is your child’s birthday in the warm, summer months (the perfect weather for an outdoor celebration) or is it smack in the middle of winter? The date of your party will influence every other decision you make, from where you’ll hold it to what activities you’ll plan.

Venue/Location

Are you holding the party at your house or are you going to rent an outside venue for it? There are tons of great venues such as parks, family-friendly restaurants, aquariums to choose from.

Theme

Do they want a superhero party (for the Marvel/DC fan) or a kids disco party (for the budding dancer)? What about pamper parties or princess parties? One thing to remember is that it’s 2019 – don’t be so focused on ‘boys’ or ‘girls’ themes. Instead, ask your child what they want, and be open to what they come up with.

Number Of Guests

Of course you want all of your friends and family to be there, but that’s not realistic for your venue or budget. So narrow it down to the people who must be there – again, get your kid involved in this. Depending on the age of your child and their friends, you may need to strike the right balance between the number of kids and the number of parents/chaperones.

Dietary Requirements

Whether you’re cooking yourself or getting the party catered, there should be something for everyone. Ask for any dietary restrictions on the invite, or call other kids’ parents to confirm if their kids have any allergies or special diets that you need to take into account. This helps you avoid fatal accidents while also helping all the kids feel included.

Entertainment/Games

To keep toddlers and young kids occupied, consider creating a ‘program’. Structured and supervised games are the best way to keep the fun going and minimise incidents. For older kids and teenagers, party entertainers and activities may not be what they’re looking for. Instead, consider other fun alternatives like sponsoring a trip to the movies, a board game night, or just a chill hangout (with food and drinks) for your child and their friends.

Budget

Unless you can afford a ‘spare no expense’ approach to party planning, you must set your budget first! You can also use this as a teaching opportunity for your kids to help them understand the value of money. Work together to create a budget that’s prudent but still has enough room for the most important things.

Your Guide To Kids’ Party Themes, Suppliers, And More

Kids Party Ideas/Themes

  • Recreate your child’s favourite movie or TV show with relevant decorations and games. You can even hire someone to ‘dress up’ as their favourite character.
  • Circus/carnival themes are gender-neutral and fun for all ages. Set up ‘booths’ with different activities, and invite a few clowns to put on a show. And make sure to have popcorn and cotton candy at the ready!
  • Throw an interactive birthday party – sit everyone down for arts & crafts, get them in the kitchen to help bake and decorate the celebrant’s cake, or have them do a cool science experiment together.
  • Have an ‘under the sea party’ complete with bubbles, colourful ‘coral’ decorations, and maybe even a fishy friend from the West Ryde Aquarium!
