Roxy Jacenko gave a very candid tell-all interview to 60 Minutes on August 21, allowing cameras to film the removal of a tumour from her breast to prove to online trolls she really does have cancer.
The program filmed the entire procedure, zooming in close on the Sydney PR maven’s tumour following it’s removal, which doctor’s described the size as a “small mandarin.”
Defending claims she made up the diagnosis, the mother-of-two, 36, told reporter Allison Langdon: “So much shit has happened, this is just another thing.”
Jacenko held back tears as she rehashed the nasty comments posted on social media, questioning the legitimacy of her cancer battle, just weeks after her husband Oliver Curtis was jailed for insider trading.
“Yes, I’m tough but I’m also probably broken into in a million pieces of glass on the inside,” Jacenko admitted.
During the interview the owner of Sweaty Betty PR also revealed she ignored advice from doctors to have a mastectomy.
“I wasn’t in the headspace to make rash decisions,” she explained. “I suppose, unlike everything else in my life where I’ll go full pelt, I wanted to do this one thing in a phased approach.”
During the interview Jacenko also opened up about how she is coping with her husband’s two-year jail sentence, and managing looking after children Pixie, 5, and Hunter, 2, on her own.
“I won’t lie, it’s a challenge,” she said. “I put up a façade that shows the days are not hard, but behind that façade it is very hard.”
Jacenko also said that she hasn’t told her children the truth about their father’s jail sentence.
“I think there’s certain things you choose to tell a child. I’ve said he’s in China,” she admitted.
