Sir Elton John has written a blog post for The Hill, a US political website, addressing North Carolina’s controversial bathroom law.
The proposed legislation, known as House Bill 2 (HB2) requires all public school students to use the bathroom for the gender they were assigned at birth.
The 69-year-old singer called HB2 both “discriminatory” and “dangerous”.
John now joins a list of celebrities who have publically spoken out against HB2. The list includes Nick Jonas, Demi Lovato and Bruce Springsteen, who cancelled a concert in North Carolina.
Sir Elton wrote in his piece, “It’s dangerous, and it goes beyond bathrooms. As the father of two children, I would hope their world is free of discriminatory, hateful legislation like North Carolina’s.”
John also criticised North Carolina governor Pat McCrory for wasting millions of dollars of tax powers money defending the bill after McCrory admitted he had never met a transgender individual.
Other celebrities to address the issue include Caitlyn Jenner and Donald Trump.
Trump said to NBC’s Today Show that people should use “whatever bathroom they feel is appropriate”, and Caitlyn Jenner had previously appeared in a video entering a female bathroom in in Trump International Tower, NYC. After leaving the bathroom, Jenner sent a message to Ted Cruz regarding his position on HB2, “By the way, Ted, nobody got molested.”
Caitlyn Jenner later clarified that her comments did not endorse any candidate.
