I’m obsessed with Obsession, and I haven’t even seen the film yet.
Fed by a slew of perfectly edited TikTok clips, I’m yet to go and actually watch the movie, but I desperately want to.
Because my FYP knows me well, I’ve managed to stay across every little bit of information about this iconic thriller, including a video the film’s costume designer shared about one very specific (and very symbolic) dress that appears in the film twice.
“When I first read the script by [Curry Barker], it was clear that costumes held an important place in the narrative,” Blair James said in the video.
“He included only three costume notes, one of which described Sarah wearing a purple flower dress at Ian’s party.”
The third? Nikki wears Sarah’s dress at the end.

“Initially, Curry was open-minded about the dress choice,” Blair says. “He indicated that if the purple flower dress didn’t work out, it was okay. However, recognising the significance of this choice, I was determined to bring it to life.”
“My challenge was not only to ensure that the dress worked aesthetically on the actress, [Megan Lawless], but it also needed to appear appealing to the audience.”
The dress also had to work on Inde Navarrette (Nikki), who wears the same one at the very end of the film.
“What I love about this particular piece is how it transformed on both actors, creating a visual excitement that might go unnoticed by some viewers. This aspect highlights how costumes can appear distinct on different characters, adding layers to the narrative.”
The influence of the dress
Blair’s video on the costume design for Obsession has already garnered over a million views, over 200k likes and hundreds of comments.
With over 50k likes, the top comment underneath Blair’s TikTok confirms how popular this dress is going to be, saying: “Are you aware that you indirectly choose hundreds of thousands of people’s Halloween costumes this year?”
Megan, the actress who played Sarah and wore the dress first on camera, also chimed in: “Best outfits I’ve ever worn on camera.”
