American media might have taken over the world, but we think it’s the Aussies who made it all possible. Some of the greatest actors in Hollywood are from the land down under. But with such flawless Faux-American accents you might never know!
In this list, we look at the top celebrities (both male and female) who were born in Australia, or who grew up here. We’ll take a look at their humble roots, and see what they’re up to these days, and where they live.
5. Margot Robbie

Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad, Naomi Lapaglia in The Wolf of Wall Street (and her infamous nude scene), and Tonya Harding in I, Tonya. Margot Robbie absolutely nails the Brooklyn tinged voice work of these characters, so much that she seems to have gotten her own unique form of accent-based typecasting. But Robbie ain’t no New Yorker; she was born in a farm on Queensland in Dalby!
Margot starred in no less than four movies in 2018, and has three more set up for 2019. She’s also reprising the Harley Quinn role in 2020’s Birds of Prey as well as 2021’s The Suicide Squad. On top of all this, she’s apparently playing Barbie (yes, the Barbie) at some point; she definitely looks the part, so we’ve got our hopes up.
Currently, Margot lives on a Los Angeles property with her husband Tom Ackerley.
4. Russell Crowe

“Are you not entertained?”, The famous quote from The Gladiator might as well have been Russell Crowe’s battle cry for recognition by awarding bodies for his killer performances. He’d go on to win the Oscar for The Gladiator, and he’d be nominated again the next year for A Beautiful Mind which made him one of just fifteen people ever to be nominated for an Oscar three years in a row.
Can you imagine jumpstarting your career with three Oscar nominations and one win? It’s no surprise that he’d go on to get roles in Master and Commander, Cinderella Man, Man of Steel, Les Miserables, and Noah, among many others.
Of course, he’s not loved by everyone—Russel notorious for being a hothead, having gotten into many altercations in his career ultimately leading to a very public and embarrassing arrest in 2005 in New York.
Though technically a Kiwi hailing from Strathmore Park, Russell Crowe been living in Australia for most of his life. He recently divorced from long-time partner Danielle Spencer.
Currently Russell lives in Rose Bay in Sydney, but he occasionally visits his property up in Townsville in Queensland.
3. Cate Blanchett

Cate Blanchett has led one of the most iconic and acclaimed careers in Hollywood. She’s landed deep and interesting roles like the serene but powerful Galadriel in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, and Katharine Hepburn in The Aviator.
Unlike most of the entries on this list, Cate has never spent an extended period of time living in the US. Born in Melbourne, she’s spent a decade in Brighton with her husband Andrew Upton, and ended up buying a home in East Sussex, where she currently lives.
2. Hugh Jackman

Who would’ve guessed it, one of the most iconic American superheroes, Wolverine, is played by a theatre nerd hailing from Sydney? He’s done such a good job playing Wolverine that it’s hard to imagine anyone else in the role.
Hugh Jackman then went on to show his musical chops in Les Miserables and The Greatest Showman, cementing him as one of Hollywood’s finest despite the potential for being typecast.
His moving performance in 2017’s Logan, marked a new level of maturity for superhero movies. The result of all these performances culminated in an Emmy win, a Grammy win, an Academy Award nomination, and a Tony Award, making him one of the most well-regarded Australian celebs in the business.
Today, Jackman lives in New York’s West Village with fellow Aussie actress Deborra-Lee Furness and their two children, and they’ve recently bought a majestic holiday home in the Hamptons.
1. Nicole Kidman

When you think of “Famous Australian celebrities,” no name comes so readily to mind as Nicole Kidman. Born in Hawaii to Australian parents but having grown up in Sydney, Kidman has led the kind of Hollywood career that most actors and actresses could only dream of. From Moulin Rouge, to The Hours, to working with the Stanley Kubrick in Eyes Wide Shut; with an Academy Award, five Golden Globes, two Emmys and even a Silver Bear, under her belt.
With a career spanning 36 years and a total gross of over $5 billion, Kidman doesn’t look like she’s taking a break any time soon. Fresh out of an appearance in the 2018 DC blockbuster Aquaman, she has two movies lined up for 2019, maintaining her status as one of the top movie and TV celebrities in the world.
Offscreen, she and husband Keith Urban have just sold their Tennessee home, and own properties in LA, Sydney, and NSW.
