Billy Crystal and his wife, Janice, rushed to the Rob Reiner’s home shortly after his death in an apparent homicide.
The couple, who were longtime friends of the director, were allegedly called in a panic by Rob’s daughter, Romy, and informed that he and his wife, Michele Singer, had been murdered.
The 27-year-old daughter of the couple reportedly found her parents with their throats slit in their Brentwood home and rang the Crystals directly after the police.
How did Billy Crystal see Rob Reiner’s corpse?
Billy and his wife Janice rushed to their friends’ home to say their goodbyes immediately after receiving the call — reportedly arriving at the same time that first responders tend to the bodies.
When police closed off the crime scene, Billy was seen clutching his wife and looking distraught leaving the property as they both wiped away tears.
Who is the murder suspect?
A source told TMZ that Romy informed the police that her “dangerous” brother Nick had been living in the home and was “possibly behind the murders and should be considered a suspect.”
Romy told police Nick was not there when she arrived. However, he was located and arrested at approximately 9:15 PM Sunday near the USC campus.
People reported that sources allege the couple’s son was the perpetrator, and he has now been arrested on suspicion of homicide. The LA Sheriff’s Department confirmed on Monday that the director’s youngest son, Nick, was in custody and being held on a $US4 million ($6m AUD) bail agreement.
“We have our robbery homicide division handling the investigation,” LA police chief Jim McDonnell told reporters. “They worked throughout the night on this case and were able to take into custody Nick Reiner, a suspect in this case. He was subsequently booked for murder.”
Who is Nick Reiner?
Nick is the middle child of Rob and Michele and often spoke about his long battle with drug addiction that started in his early teens and eventually left him homeless.
In a 2016 interview with People, Nick told the outlet that his stints in and out of rehab began around age 15. As his addiction worsened, however, he moved further away from home and spent large stretches of time homeless in other US states.
What happened the night before the murder?
It’s now been revealed that Rob and his son got into a “heated argument” on Saturday night at Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party.
Sources told People: “Nick was freaking everyone out, acting crazy, kept asking people if they were famous.” Rob and Michele, then reportedly left the party after the argument, according to TMZ.
When did Billy Crystal and Rob Reiner meet?
The duo first met on the set of All in the Family in 1975 when Billy was cast as Al Bender, the best friend of Rob’s character, Michael Stivic.
In a 2016 Hollywood Reporter interview, Billy opened up about their friendship, saying: “It worked really well, and we said, ‘It feels right onstage, why don’t we just continue this in our lives?’ We became the closest of friends.”
Their friendship was as strong as their professional relationship, with the talented pair collaborating brilliantly on so many legendary films such as This Is Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride, and of course, When Harry Met Sally.
The iconic rom-com was special to Rob for so many reasons. Not only was it the biggest project he ever worked on with his best friend Billy, but it was also where he met the love of his life, Michele.
Michele’s impact was so great on Rob after meeting him that their real-life love story inspired him to change the ending of When Harry Met Sally… even though production on the movie had already begun!
In a previous interview with The Guardian, Rob revealed: “Originally, Harry and Sally didn’t get together. But then I met Michele and I thought: ‘OK, I see how this works.'”
Rob and Michele were the definition of true love right until the end.
