The global phenomenon that was Liane Moriarty’s novel Big Little Lies is getting a sequel almost a decade after the first book was published. This marks the twelfth novel from the author, and the first ever sequel, with Liane taking to Instagram on March 12 to make the announcement.
“It was such a joy for me to return to Pirriwee with Celeste, Madeline and Jane,” Liane said. “I hope that you too will feel like you’re back with old friends.”
On March 19, Liane released more details about the upcoming novel, revealing that “the kids are teens, their parents are older (but not necessarily wiser) and old secrets and new truths are about to catch up with everyone”.
Big Little Lies season 3 will be based off the new book.
What is the Big Little Lies sequel Big Little Truths about?
In Big Little Truths, Liane has acknowledged that while the world has slightly changed, the drama that accompanies it has well and truly stayed the same.
Set to be published by Penguin Random House in August 2026, the sequel continues the story of the five women – Madeline, Celeste, Jane, Renata and Bonnie – from the first book who bonded over their entanglement in a homicide investigation.
However, now jumping forward a decade, these women are dealing with all of the same drama (and more) as their kids, now teenagers, replace “playdates” for “drugs, sex, and alcohol.”
The book synopsis reads: “When a strange man lurks around the school asking supposedly innocent questions and the principal receives a severed human finger in the mail, the community is in an uproar. This tightly connected group will finally have to face the full repercussions of the big little truths they have—and haven’t—shared with their kids, with each other, and with themselves.”
While loyal fans of the novel and series have the opportunity to reconnect with their beloved characters and the world Liane created, Crown Publishing – a division of Penguin Random House – has described that new readers will equally be able to absorb this new work as it can “stand entirely on its own.”
