Britney Spears has officially finalised her divorce from ex-husband Sam Asghari.
Speaking to People, sources confirmed that the couple have reportedly concluded their divorce proceedings, stating, “The divorce was amicable and the prenup[tial agreement] was not challenged.”
The source also responded to speculation that Britney was providing financial support to her ex-husband to uphold his living expenses, sharing, “The report that she is in financial distress is false and she is not on any lease for him.”
“Britney is continuing to flex her freedom and is moving on.”
News of the couple’s divorce proceedings comes nine months after the 41-year-old singer took to social media to confirm her split from Sam.
“As everyone knows, Hesam and I are no longer together. 6 years is a long time to be with someone so, I’m a little shocked, but I’m not here to explain why because it’s honestly nobody’s business,” Britney wrote to Instagram.
Sam also confirmed the couple’s split, writing, “After 6 years of love and commitment to each other, my wife and I have decided to end our journey together. We will hold onto the love and respect we have for each other and I wish her the best always.”
Confirmation of the couple’s divorce came less than one week after TMZ first reported that the pair had separated, with sources telling the publication that the couple’s relationship had been in “deep trouble” for a number of months.
According to TMZ, Sam allegedly confronted Britney over allegations of cheating. The publication noted that there is no evidence to support the allegations that Britney had been unfaithful in her marriage however, one source speaking to TMZ has claimed “It’s only a matter of time before Sam files for divorce.”
Rumours surrounding the couple’s potential marital issues first surfaced in March 2023, following images of the couple out and about without their wedding bands. A representative for Sam previously addressed the speculation, telling People that the 29-year-old “simply took off his ring because he is filming a movie.”
In the months following, Sam addressed the speculation regarding concerns for the singer’s mental health, telling Access Hollywood, “My wife is in full control of her life and will continue to make all decisions involving her care regardless of the circumstances. Speculation on her health is inappropriate and should end immediately.”
Following the announcement of the couple’s divorce, Spears also addressed her mental health, writing, “I would love to show my emotions and tears on how I really feel, but [for] some reason I’ve always had to hide my weaknesses. If I wasn’t my dad’s strong solider, I would be sent away to places to get fixed by doctors.”
“That’s when I needed my family the most. You’re supposed to be loved unconditionally, not under conditions, so I will be as strong as I can and do my best.”
Britney’s announcement of her divorce came just over two months after she and Sam had celebrated their one-year wedding anniversary.
“One year married to the woman of my dreams. Happy anniversary my love,” he wrote to Instagram alongside a snap of the couple sharing a kiss on their wedding day.
The couple first met in 2016 on the set of Spears’ Slumber Party music video, with the model starring as the Toxic singer’s love interest.
Speaking on his experience, Sam told Men’s Health, “I was excited that I get to meet one of the biggest artists of all time. I had butterflies.”
The romance between the pair continued to blossom off-set, with the couple announcing their engagement in 2021.
The couple tied the knot in June 2022 in an intimate ceremony at Spears’ secluded Los Angeles home.
“Wow!!! Holy holy crap!!! WE DID IT!!! WE GOT MARRIED,” Spears wrote to Instagram at the time, with the pop princess sharing a photo of herself alongside A-list wedding guests Madonna, Donatella Versace, Selena Gomez, and Drew Barrymore.
“I am very ecstatic this day has come, and they are married. I know he wanted this for so long. He is so caring and supportive every step of the way,” Asghari’s representative Brandon Cohen told the Associated Press.
