A series of devastating wildfires have erupted in Los Angeles, California, with the fire path destroying several residential communities in the Palisades, Malibu, and the Hollywood Hills.
The combination of extreme wind and drought-like conditions has seen the fire exacerbate exponentially in a matter of hours, with over 180,00 Californians now under evacuation orders, while an additional 200,000 are currently under evacuation warnings.
As the city begins to grapple with the tragic impact of the ongoing fires, many Californians, including Hollywood celebrities, have taken to social media to share valuable resources and insight into the scale of the devastation.
Where are the fires in Los Angeles?
The major wildfires in Los Angeles started on January 7, 2025, in the Pacific Palisades and over the coming days, the fires have since spread to engulf several suburbs surrounding Hollywood and wider Los Angeles.
As of Friday, January 10, the Palisades fire has decimated over 28,000 acres of land between Santa Monica and Malibu – making it the largest of the five active wildfires.
The smallest of the wildfires is the Sunset fire, which ignited on January 8 and has currently burnt close to 60 acres surrounding the Hollywood Sign in the Hollywood Hills.
To the east of the state, the Eaton fire near Pasadena’s Eaton Valley has yet to be contained and tragically killed five people.
In the northern region, the Lidia and Hurst fires have been somewhat contained, with the Lidia fire in the Antelope Valley now 40% contained and San Fernando’s Hurst fire now 10% contained.
How did the Los Angeles wildfires start?
While the exact cause for the Los Angeles wildfires is currently still under investigation, the extent of the fires is believed to have been exacerbated by the unusually dry conditions and high wind gusts caused by the Santa Ana winds reaching up to 160 km/hr – creating the strongest wind conditions Southern California has experienced in over a decade
