Was Alex Rodriguez listening when Ellen DeGeneres joked the clock was ticking on a proposal to Jennifer Lopez?
The former MLB slugger, 43, popped the question to Lopez, 49, on Saturday — and DeGeneres is already game to help plan the wedding.
“Yes. I’ll be your Maid of Honour,” the comedian, 61, wrote on Lopez’s Instagram announcing the happy news, as captured by Comments by Celebs. The popular Instagram account also pointed out how Lopez tagged DeGeneres in the engagement post.
The talk show host has long been invested in the couple’s two-year relationship, and in November told the Second Act star that Rodriguez had texted her that he was getting ready to propose.
“You should [get married], because y’all seem very happy,” DeGeneres said. “I mean, it would be good to do for Christmas.”
A Christmas proposal didn’t happen — and when Lopez appeared on the show again in February, DeGeneres played her part in helping to speed up the process by giving Lopez a giant clock with the couple’s faces on it.
“Because you and A-Rod just celebrated your two-year anniversary… This is a clock, and it’s basically to remind him that time is ticking and he should hurry up and propose,” DeGeneres said. “Or you should propose.”
Lopez and Rodriguez celebrated their engagement by sharing the same photo to Instagram of her massive rock.
“She said yes,” Rodriguez wrote, while Lopez captioned hers with heart emojis.
The milestone was celebrated on social media by many stars, including Gwen Stefani, Heidi Klum, Naomi Campbell and Gabrielle Union, who all offered congratulations on Instagram.
“This could conveniently work as a reflector as well. Congrats!” model Nina Agdal joked of Lopez’s new bling.
The ring caught lots of attention on social media, with many joking that its size would blind the average person.
“There’s a reason ARod and Jennifer Lopez had their engagement photo in the shade……That size of a ring would be bright in the light, and we’d scroll and have this reaction with the photo being posted everywhere,” wrote one person.
The couple have been dating since February 2017, and a source told WHO’s sister publication, PEOPLE Rodriguez popped the question during a getaway in the Bahamas.
Benny Medina, Lopez’s long-time manager, also confirmed the news, while Rodriguez’s rep Ron Berkowitz said, “They are on vacation and got engaged today.”
“I understand him in a way that I don’t think anyone else could and he understands me in a way that no one else could ever,” Lopez said in Vanity Fair‘s December 2017 cover story. “We put so much pressure on ourselves to be great, to be the best all the time. We understood that about each other. When we came together it was, ‘Oh my God, I was the same way.’”
