How Mary Donaldson fell in love with the Prince of Denmark

When a girl from Tassie met a boy from Denmark in a Sydney bar in 2000, little did we know this would be the start of one of the most celebrated royal love stories of recent times.

Mary Donaldson first crossed paths with Fred at Sydney CBD pub the Slip Inn during the 2000 Olympics. And at the time the then 28-year-old had no idea she’d just met a Danish royal.

You couldn’t make it up!

They spent the first year of their relationship in a long distance romance, with Frederik making secret trips to Australia.

In 2001, Mary moved to Denmark and their story went from fairy tale to folklore.

The couple attended the Melbourne Cup together in November 2002 while they were still dating.

Two years after Mary moved to Denmark, on October 8, 2003, it was announced that the couple were engaged.

“I don’t recall wishing that one day I would be a princess,” Mary said shortly after the engagement. “I wanted to be a veterinarian.”

The world watched in wonder as former real estate agent, Mary, married her prince on May 14, 2004, at Copenhagen Cathedral in the nation’s capital.

Mary’s bridesmaids included her sister Patricia Bailey, her friend Amber Petty and her eldest sister Jane Alison Stephens.

Her father, John Donaldson walked her down the aisle as she wore a gown by Danish designer Uffe Frank.

And with their wedding, Mary became Australia’s own real life princess.

Frederik and Mary are now the proud parents of four children: Prince Christian (born on October 15, 2005), Princess Isabella (born on April 21, 2007), and twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine (born January 8, 2011).
