Jelena Dokic: Everything you need to know about the tennis champ

Jelena Dokic is a Croatia-born, former professional Australian tennis player-turned-coach, commentator and writer.

Before she retired, Jelena, 36, was the top-ranked junior in the world at the age of 15. A year later at the age of just 16 and ranging 129th in the world, she achieved one of the biggest upsets in tennis history, beating Martina Hingis 6–2, 6–0 in the 1999 Wimbledon Championship.  

Her highest ranking as a tennis player was world No. 4 in August 2002. She won the Women’s Tennis Association Tour events on all surfaces during her career.

And while she remains one of Australia’s greatest ever sports stars, a lot of the headlines surrounding her focus on her outspoken father and coach Damir and his outbursts during her games.

In 2000, before she banned him from her life, she took his advice and switched allegiance to the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, which was the subject of much media speculation. She switched back to Australia in 2005, and would later accuse her father of physical and mental abuse in her 2017 autobiography.

She made a return to tennis in 2008 and finished 2009 back in the world top 100, but struggled badly with form and injuries, and retired from playing professionally in 2014.

Who are Jelena Dokic’s parents?

Jelena was born to a Serb father Damir Dokic and a Croat mother, Ljiljana (née Podnar).

Was her father Damir involved in any public controversies?

Damir Dokic was involved in numerous incidents. At the 2001 Australian Open, he claimed irregularities in the draw after Jelena’s first-round loss to Lindsay Davenport and he was banned from the tournament due to his aggressive behavior. He later said: “I think the draw is fixed just for her.”

In June 2009, he was convicted and sentenced to 15 months in prison for threatening the Australian ambassador to Serbia with a hand grenade, for causing public endangerment and for illegal possession of weapons. Following two appeals, the sentence was reduced to 12 months.

Jelena revealed in her 2017 autobiography that she had “suicidal thoughts” after she claimed her father would whip her with a belt, sometimes so severely that she lost consciousness, if she failed on the court.

Jelena said her mother, Liliana, stayed in the marriage for the sake of Jelena and her younger brother, Savo. Jelena also claimed that her mother frequently witnessed the beatings but was unable to stop them.

After airing the shocking revelations in her bestselling book Unbreakable in 2017, Jelena said that she attempted to mend her relationship with her father, but he refused to apologise for his behaviour.

In August 2019, Jelena said that she has stopped attempting to reconcile with her father and has completely cut him out of her life.

“I’m fasting for 12 hours and eating within a 12 hour period. That’s something that I’ve really loved… using your body clock helps you lose weight a bit quicker,” she said.

As well as sticking to a healthy diet, Jelena makes sure she moves her body everyday.

In particular, she’s enjoyed getting back into running after being forced to stop due to her weight.
