Astrology 101

Before we get into the personality traits of the Leo, let’s do a quick astrology lesson, as we’ll be using some terms that casual astrology fans might not be familiar with.

Sun, Moon, And Rising Signs

Simply, your sun sign is your “main” sign, and is determined by your date of birth. According to Bustle, your sun sign is “the core of who you are” and is “generally considered your highest expression of self”.

Your moon sign determines your emotional self, meaning it represents your deepest desires, what makes you vulnerable, and what you  keep hidden and private from the rest of the world.

Your rising or ascendant sign represents your “outer self” or who you project to other people. It’s helpful to think of your rising and your moon signs as total opposites. Your rising is the parts of yourself that you want others to see and is what most people believe to be true about you.

The Four Elements: Earth, Fire, Water, And Air

Strangely enough, if you’re a fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender, this concept is going to be a lot easier to understand. In Avatar, each element is connected to a season. Winter for water, spring for earth, summer for fire, and fall for air. Benders, or those who can manipulate the elements, are more powerful in their respective seasons. Okay, so how does that relate to you and the zodiac signs?

Signs are also categorised by the elements, and their personalities are affected by the elements they fall under. Water signs are usually emotional and sensitive, earth signs are practical and stubborn, fire signs are, well, fiery, and air signs are flexible and free-spirited. Leos are considered fire signs, along with Sagittarians and Aries.

The Qualities: Cardinal, Fixed, Mutable

Wait, what? There are “qualities” too? We know it sounds complicated, but bear with us, you’ll get it all in a second!

The qualities of the signs, or their “modalities”, represent how they interact with the world. Cardinal signs like Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn are the ones most likely to become leaders and originators. The fixed signs, or Leo, Taurus, Scorpio, and Aquarius, are stable, focused, and find it easy to be productive. And last, mutable signs like Sagittarius, Gemini, Virgo, and Pisces are flexible and sometimes even seek change.

What Are Leos Like?

Okay, now that you’re more familiar with astrology terms, we can get to the nitty-gritty of what makes up a Leo!

Leos are people born between July 23 and August 22. As fire signs, Leos exude warmth and joy, but they can also be feisty and temperamental. As fixed signs, they’re driven, focused, and are happiest when they are most productive. But they’re not too serious either – Leos are often the life of the party!

Leo Suns

As we mentioned, Leo suns are bold and charismatic. Pair that with the creative side of their personality, and you’ll understand why Leos usually make great artists, actors, actresses, singers, and musicians. They also make very good leaders, and there’s no doubt that some of the greatest minds and leaders in history were likely Leos!

Fun fact: Speaking of leaders; Barack Obama is a Leo!

Famous astrologer Susan Miller says Leo men and women are very generous with “warmth and [a] golden heart [that] could dissolve the polar ice caps”.

Leo Moons

From a positive perspective, Leo moons are optimistic and childlike. On the downside, Leos can be arrogant, stubborn, and have huge egos.

Leo Ascendants

Those with Leo rising placements are easily seen by friends as the “entertainers” of the group – dazzling them with their quick wit and boundless exuberance. Though sometimes, Leos can be rather irksome too, as they often are loud and energetic, even in situations that require them to use their “inside voices”.

Is There A Downside To Being A Leo?

Leos get a lot of flak for being conceited and self-absorbed, but some will argue that they can’t help it if they’re born beautiful – that’s the ego we were talking about!
