But what actually happens behind the scenes of a royal birth? What birthing plan has the royal couple put in place? And how long after the birth will we have to wait to find out whether there’s a new little lord or lady in the royal family?

Questions, questions…

Here’s what we know so far.

Where will Meghan give birth?

According to recent reports, Meghan has pushed tradition, opting to give birth at The Mulberry Birth Centre at Frimley Park hospital in Surrey. It makes sense as it’s closer to their Frogmore Cottage home than the Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital in central London, which was the hospital choice for her sister-in-law Kate, Duchess of Cambridge and Harry’s mother, Diana.

How will Meghan get to hospital?

It’s likely that she’ll travel with her husband and be given a police escort.

Diana and Charles were driven in a police Land Rover before the princess gave birth to Prince William, and over 30 years later William and Kate were dropped off by car at the side entrance of the hospital for the birth of baby George.

Are they planning a natural birth?

According the The Express, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been practicing natural birthing methods, including yoga and breathing to help Meghan with a natural birth.

Who will Meghan and Harry tell first?

As per royal protocol, Harry will telephone his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, (on an encrypted phone) to let her know of the safe arrival of Baby Sussex, who’ll be seventh in line to the throne, and whether they’ve had a girl or a boy.

This means Meghan will have to hold off telling her mother, Doria Ragland, or anyone else about their new baby until the Queen has been told.

When do the public find out?

The couple will spend a few hours getting to know their newborn before they share their news with the rest of the world.

The official statement will be placed outside Buckingham Palace announcing the birth. The framed, typewritten note includes details such as the baby’s gender, time of birth, as well as a short sentence about the wellbeing of the mother and child.

There will also be an announcement on the Royal Family website, on Twitter, and we expect the couple to make an announcement on their new Instagram account.

Will Meghan pose for photos after the birth?

It’s unlikely that Meghan will pose outside the hospital with their new baby, unlike her sister in law who was photographed with Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis only hours after giving birth.

Will Baby Sussex be a Prince or Princess?

We’ll find out the baby’s exact title a few days after the birth, but it’s unlikely Harry and Meghan’s firstborn will be given the title of Prince or Princess because of current royal protocol, which states that only those in direct line to the throne will have a royal title. It’s more likely the baby will be an Earl if he’s a boy, or a Lady if they have a girl.
