Who would have thought a bowling date would be the start of such a perfect relationship? It sounds straight out of a movie, but that really is how Australian Idol judge Meghan Trainor met her now-husband: Spy Kids Actor Daryl Sabara.
The couple, who began dating in 2016 and share two children together have gone from strength to strength in their relationship, sharing an intimate look at their day-to-day life with fans on social media.
From double dates to parenthood, here is everything we know about the cute couple’s relationship!
It started with a bowling date….
We’ve got Chloë Grace Moretz to thank for this Hollywood couple. In July 2016, Meghan asked her friend Chloë to set her up and the rest is history!
The new pair went on a double date with Chloë and her then-boyfriend Brooklyn Beckam, going bowling and singing karaoke. Although it may seem daunting to sing alongside a grammy-winning singer, Daryl took it in stride, impressing Meghan with a rendition of Elton John’s ‘Your Song.’
In return, Meghan took the opportunity to serenade her date with the not-so-subtle track, ‘Marry Me.’
By October of the same year, the couple had gone Instagram official! And the relationship went from strength to strength.
“It’s different than any other relationship I ever had,” Meghan told E!, revealing the couple exchanged “I love you’s” by date six.
“That cheesy thing that everyone says, ‘When you know, you know,’ I knew something, we both knew, like, ‘Well, this is crazy.’ That’s what we would say, looking at each other. Like, ‘This isn’t normal.'”
Through surgery and sign language
In April 2017 Meghan underwent a second vocal cord surgery, telling Ellen DeGeneres that Daryl was a huge help during the recovery process.
“The real trouper was my boyfriend, ’cause he learned sign language for me, so I’d spell out words for him, and I’d get frustrated, like, ‘No, wrong!’ and he would learn and he just stuck with me through it. He would stick with me and paint with me, even though his were not as good as mine. He put effort in it.”
Oversharing? Never!
Meghan and Daryl don’t shy away from sharing details of their relationship – no matter how messy! From explaining the backstory of them getting spotted at a sex shop (buying something for a *friend*) to revealing their new house had matching his and her toilets in the one bathroom, they really do share it all.
Wedding Bliss
The couple got engaged in December 2017, with Daryl proposing to Meghan on the eve of her 24th birthday.
“He proposed to me under a tunnel of beautiful Christmas lights and surprised me with my family and friends. I’m still in shock. I’ve never been this happy!” she explained on Instagram.
The couple got married in December 2018 in an intimate backyard ceremony, the same day Meghan celebrated her 25th birthday.
“It’s the beginning of an awesome, whole new life. I got way more than I ever wished for,” she told PEOPLE at the time.
And then there were three
On October 7, 2020 Meghan and Daryl announced they were expecting their first child together. The pair made an announcement during an appearance on the Today Show – cute!
Never one to shy away from the details, Meghan revealed to Today Parents that she couldn’t have sex with her husband during her pregnancy.
“Maybe this is weird, but mentally I can’t have sex while our son is in between us. All my pregnancy apps say it feels really good. But all I can think about is that there’s a little boy in my belly,” she said.
The pair welcomed their son Riley, on February 8 2021, announcing the news via Instagram. Months later, Meghan shared more details on the traumatic birth, revealing that since the baby was in the breech position she had to have a caesarean and that breathing issues led to a stay in the neonatal intensive care unit.
During an interview with PEOPLE, Meghan shared that she saw a therapist following her son’s birth, which led to her realising “how traumatic that all was, and how I was having PTSD at night when I would try to go to sleep,” she said.
Meghan also explained that it was “scary” to think back on her childbirth experience, especially now that the couple are trying for baby number two.

An exciting start to 2023
In January 2023, Meghan made the exciting announcement that she and Daryl were expecting baby number two! The singer made the reveal on Instagram, writing “Baby #2 coming this summer.”
And then there were four!
Meghan and Daryl took to Instagram to share the birth of their second child. “On July 1st (our 7 year anniversary of our first date) we welcomed Barry Bruce Trainor into the world 🐻💙” the pair captioned a series of photos.
He was a big boy at 8lbs 7oz…and sideways (transverse), but we had an amazing, successful c-section, and I finally got my skin to skin time! Thank you to all of the incredible doctors and nurses who took such great care of us❤️
