But what makes ‘90s trends so enduring?

Is it the female empowerment? The teenage angst?

Or are we just nostalgic for a pre-smartphone era? The famous trends, styles, and hits have all become part of our cultural identity, and the people who defined this decade still hold a presence that can be felt today.

Defining a Nineties Icon

What makes an icon? It’s not just about being famous (though that certainly is a big part of it), but being famous for the right reasons. An icon is someone who is imitated, emulated, and revered, to the point where they become representational of the culture of their respective era.

The ‘90s was defined by the rise in feminism, the increased skepticism of the government, and the acceptance of alternative forms of lifestyle and culture. It was an era that embraced the power of the individual to contribute to the community. It also marked the very beginning of the Internet age, helped by the development of technologies that would change the world in the ‘00s.

The icons of the ‘90s were utterly symbolic of these shifting trends and forces. So who exactly were these icons, and where are they now?
