Working overnight on the royal wedding coverage, one thing became clear as soon as Meghan stepped out of her car at the chapel – this wedding dress was divisive.
“Too simple” said some online, “ill fitting” said others. “Not regal enough”, “too plain” – the criticisms came fast.
But for goodness’ sake – if the woman had worn a meringue, trolls would have accused her of dressing too frivolously, too young, too trashy.
What it was, was this. A dress that spoke of elegance and simplicity. A dress that said here comes a woman who is independent and who is walking herself down the aisle. It followed the rules but had exquisite detail – that veil! – and was designed by a strong British woman. It was classic. And it was cool.
Twitter (of course) descended into chaos as everyone had an opinion, calling it “the biggest anticlimax of the year”, and even comparing it to an A4 piece of paper (harsh!)
But as one (smart and correct) Twitter user fired back at the critics. “Meghan’s dress is stunning you all just love to hate everything”.
Say no more. The woman looked perfect.
