As the palace reveals Prince Philip has officially been cleared by doctors following his car crash, details of the collision are coming to light.
Bystander Roy Warne, who helped free the Duke of Edinburgh, 97, from hisLand Rover after it overturned, described the crash to BBC Radio 4’s Today: “I saw it careering, tumbling across the road and ending up on the other side.”
“I asked him to move his left leg and that freed his right leg and then I helped him get out,” Warne continued. “He was obviously shaken, and then he went and asked if everyone else was alright.”
Warne then said he overheard the Duke telling police he had been “dazzled by the sun.”
Philip was able to stand after he was helped from the vehicle. “There was a little bit of blood and one of the royal entourage gave me a wipe to wipe my hands,” Warne said.
The Automobile Association (AA) in the U.K. estimates sun glare causes over 2,900 accidents annually on British roads.
An investigation into the crash is still ongoing.
“As is standard procedure with injury collisions, the incident will be investigated and any appropriate action taken,” police in Norfolk said. “We are aware of the public interest in this case, however, as with any other investigation it would be inappropriate to speculate on the causes of the collision until an investigation is carried out.”
Philip visited the hospital Friday morning, where he received the all-clear from doctors.
“On Doctor’s advice, The Duke of Edinburgh visited the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King’s Lynn this morning for a precautionary check-up. This confirmed His Royal Highness had no injuries of concern. The Duke has returned to Sandringham,” a Buckingham Palace spokesperson said.
