Seeing someone on TV or in the movies is usually deceptive, and often their real-life height can be different from what we expect.

Being short can be a great thing – there’s always leg room on planes, and some studies suggest that shorter people may live longer, and may have a reduced risk for certain medical issues.
Here are eleven of our favourite celebrities who tend towards the shorter side, in all their pocket-sized glory.
Kylie Minogue, 152cm/4’11”
Kylie Minogue, 53, is undoubtedly one of the most famous female singers on the planet. Her height? A teeny tiny 152cm or 5’0″.
Ariana Grande, 153cm/5ft
Known for her cats eye makeup and skyscraper platforms, the 28-year-old pint-sized popstress has never let her height get in the way of stardom.
With a glittering net worth of at least $50million this is one shorty who made it big. Her height is a matter of contention, with her admitting she doesn’t know exactly how tall she is. However, we doubt she tops the 5ft mark.
Zac Efron, 173cm/5’6″
Anyone would look short next to The Rock, but 33 year old Efron who acted alongside the Rock in Baywatch is actually only 5’6″.
“I was the shortest kid in every grade, by a long shot,” he told Mens Journal, and was only 5’1″ by the time he left high school. He apparently didn’t reach his fully grown height until he turned 20.
His short status hasn’t prevented him from dating some of the hottest ladies in Hollywood: Vanessa Hudgens and Lily Collins to name just two.
Robert Downey Jr, 174cm/5’6″
Downey Jr, 56, has been photographed many times wearing dubious-looking shoes that, if you look closely enough, appear to have extra lifts.
Is he self conscious about being only 5′ 6″? Maybe.
When you’re acting alongside the heady heights of Chris Hemsworth 190cm/6’2″ it’s enough to make even Iron Man feel less than Marvel-lous … get it?
Lady Gaga, 155cm/5’1″
Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, 35, or Lady Gaga to you and me starred in a 2017 Netflix documentary about her life, entitled, Five Foot Two.
You’d assume the title was in reference to her height. But according to Gaga in an interview after MTV Movie and TV Awards, “I’m actually five-foot three and three quarters.”
The truth? Maybe she’s counting the extra centimetres on those heels…
Kanye West, 173cm/5’6″
With a personality as big as West’s, who cares how short he is?
Short or tall, the 44-year-old music whizz and entrepreneur was always destined for the big time, at least that’s what his name suggests.
Kanye is a Swahili name that means “the only one” and his middle name Omari means “God the highest.”
Anna Kendrick 157cm/5’1″
In her own words, petite actress Anna Kendrick, 36, told Glamour magazine, “I’m fine being small. I’m fine being all the things I am.”
Getting dressed isn’t always such a fine process for Kendrick, however.
“Every time a stylist tries to put me in, like, a chic pantsuit, I’m like, ‘This isn’t gonna work. It’s going to look like a diaper. I know you think that you can do it; I promise you, you can’t.”
She “appreciates stores that have petites sections.”
Salma Hayek, 157cm/5’2″
Mexican actress Salma Hayek had to do some soul searching before she came to love her short stature.
“I am 5’2″, and in Mexico, it was very important to be tall. People used to say that the short thing was a deformity… I’d come home saying, ‘everybody teases me,’” she said in an interview.
Now, the 54-year-old actress has well and truly embraced her height. “I have a confidence about myself that I see a lot of tall girls don’t. So how meaningful is it, really, to be tall?”
Lena Dunham, 160cm/5’2″
In 2015 comedian Lena Dunham, 35, went on stage to support one of her besties, Taylor Swift.
That moment gave her a new perspective on her height, or lack thereof.
“I was so thrilled to support my friend and so displeased to learn about the truth of my own height,” she told the Huffington Post.
“I’ve been feeling pretty tall, feeling pretty sturdy, and it was amazing to me, like: ‘Oh, I’m not tall. I’m chubby.'”
Reese Witherspoon, 156cm/5’1″
Reese Witherspoon, 43, may only be 156cm but her current partner Jim Toth is a towering 185cm.
Fortunately, Witherspoon is no stranger to kissing tall men. In the movie Four Christmases she acted alongside Vince Vaughn who’s 196cm.
“I stood on a lot of boxes and they had to build ramps that were about the same size as where I should be,” she said. “It was a challenge, especially the kissing scenes.”
Vanessa Hudgens, 155cm/5’1″
At age 32, Vanessa Hudgens has achieved a lot, but honesty about her height might not be one of them.
In an early interview Hudgens claims to be a teensy bit taller than sources suggest. “I like surfer guys and guys who are taller than me which is not hard because I’m only 5’3”.
So, is she 5’1″ or 5’3″? You’ll have to ask Zac Efron.
Tom Cruise, 170cm/5’6″
After divorcing Tom Cruise, 59, Nicole Kidman famously announced, “I can wear heels again!” So how tall – or short – is Cruise really?
Insiders give varying accounts and you can speculate all day about Cruise’s height but he’s more interested in being known for his movies.
By the 1990s Cruise was one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood and is currently sitting on a net worth of around $350 million.
So, does size really matter? Not for these celebs.
