Josie Werner couldn’t be any more different from George Goldfeder. But when the dancer first laid eyes on the nerdy Dungeons and Dragons player on Beauty and the Geek, she was instantly smitten.
“I had my eye on George from the start,” the 21-year-old Sydneysider tells WHO.
While the vivacious uni student signed on to the show to teach the less confident guys all her dating tricks, it was Werner who ended up being a bundle of nerves.
During a date with Goldfeder, 27, she was unable to make the first move.
“I had butterflies in my stomach and was a complete mess,” Werner says.
“I wanted to kiss him but missed all the signals. It’s fair to say there was definitely chemistry between us from day one.”
What made you sign up for the show?
Josie: After the past year, I wanted to do something that was crazy. I’m also a tomboy and wanted to show that beauty can be many things.
George: I wanted more confidence and to learn how to approach girls.
Beauty and the Geek last aired in 2014. Why is now the perfect time to bring the reality show back?
George: It’s that perfect feel-good show. This season really challenges stereotypes and shows that beauties can be smart and not all geeks are the same. It really bolsters people up and doesn’t just create drama for the sake of it.
What were your first impressions of each other?
Josie: I thought, for a geek, George is really handsome and has big muscles! But when I spoke to him the first time I realised he was a geek. He showed a genuine interest in getting to know the real me, which was something I hadn’t felt from guys before.
George: On the first night as I walked in and saw all of these beautiful women in front of me, my eye was instantly drawn to Josie’s bright blue dress – but I stayed for her smile!
What were you surprised to learn about yourself on the show?
Josie: Before, whenever I met a guy, I always felt the need to tone myself down or be less for them to like me. I never felt like the real me was enough, but now I’ve learned my self-worth – I am enough.
George: I’ve always had trouble showing vulnerability and opening up to people. But Josie and I had some amazing conversations and really talked about our hopes and fears. I was nervous but being accepted by someone as beautiful as Josie, it really helped my confidence.
Josie, after this experience could you see yourself falling for a geek?
Josie: Yes, of course! George has so much going for him. He might be a bit geeky but he’s also an amazing breakdancer, which is really hot. I’ve learned there are so many different types of geeks and it really just means you’re passionate about something. So, I’m a secret geek, too.
What is your secret geeky habit?
Josie: I love listening to true crime podcasts. Whenever I have trouble falling asleep, I put one on. I am so fascinated about what is really going through the head of someone who can commit such a gruesome murder.
George, in what ways did Josie surprise you as you got to know her?
George: I was shocked by how tough Josie is. It didn’t matter what was thrown at her in challenges, she put in 100 percent and did her best in everything. We make such a great team. She always had my back.
How has being involved in the social experiment helped your self-confidence?
George: If I walked into a coffee shop now and saw a gorgeous woman I was interested in, I’d still be nervous but would definitely go up and say hello. Six months ago, I probably wouldn’t have even bothered.
Josie: I’m much more open to finding love. Six months ago I was so over it and done with dating. I shut myself off from feeling anything for anyone after being hurt. But George helped heal my broken heart and taught me to trust again.
