Married At First Sight Australia viewers are only just getting to know groom Steve Powell as he ties the knot with bride Rebecca Zukowski.
However, there’s already one thing the internet has unanimously decided – he looks exactly like Mel Gibson.
And once you see it… yeah. There’s no going back!
MAFS groom Steve’s doppelgänger
The comparison popped up almost instantly on Reddit, with one viewer summing it up perfectly: “Has anyone said it yet… Steve is Mel Gibson’s brother. Hope he doesn’t share his politics, lol.”
Ouch… but also, fair. The silver hair, the strong jaw, the intense stare – Steve could absolutely pass as Mel Gibson’s long-lost sibling, especially during those dramatic MAFS close-ups.

Celebrity doppelgänger aside, Steve, 50, entered the experiment clear on what he wanted: a woman who loves food, enjoys a drink, doesn’t take life too seriously – and, most importantly, someone who likes to laugh.
Steve’s wish come true
“They have to be a foodie, they’ve got to enjoy drink, have a laugh, not take themselves seriously, someone that’s just themselves – that’s the most important thing,” Steve told producers before walking down the aisle.
Enter his new ‘wife’ Rebecca, a bubbly, warm-hearted 51-year-old who describes herself as someone looking for a knight in shining armour… preferably a silver fox. Tick, tick.
Their wedding was one of the strongest we’ve seen so far this season, with instant chemistry and almost identical vows. But there was one detail producers clearly couldn’t resist spotlighting – Rebecca’s very loud, very distinctive laugh.

“I laugh a lot,” Rebecca admitted while getting ready. “My laugh can be a little bit loud. I hope he likes that.” Spoiler alert: he definitely noticed it.
Before Rebecca even walked down the aisle, her laugh echoed across the venue, prompting her friends to announce, “That’s Rebecca!” long before she appeared.
When the couple finally met, Steve couldn’t help but laugh himself, joking, “Was that you I could hear laughing?”
At first, it all seemed like a match made in MAFS heaven. Steve gushed to the cameras that Rebecca ticked every box, calling their connection “beautiful” and saying, “All the traits you look for in someone, I feel like Rebecca has.”
Is the laugh too much?
But at the reception, producers leaned hard into the laugh narrative, repeatedly comparing it to a kookaburra – complete with reaction shots from Steve’s guests.
“That’s a laugh we’re going to get to know, isn’t it?” his sister joked, while one guest declared, “I love that laugh,” and another diplomatically added, “It’s definitely unique!”
Steve himself admitted the laugh caught him off guard. “It stands out,” he said. “I’m not sure that’s a normal, traditional laugh… it’s louder than I’m used to, that’s for sure!”

He joked that it “could stop traffic” and confessed it made him “jump” a little, but quickly followed it up by praising Rebecca’s heart, soul and sense of humour, which he said perfectly matched his own.
“I couldn’t be more impressed,” he told her at the reception. Rebecca, meanwhile, was floating.
“I can’t believe how happy I am right now,” she told the cameras. Even her son Austin seems fully on board with Steve as his mum’s new husband.
So will Mel-Gibson-lookalike Steve fully embrace Rebecca’s kookaburra laugh, or is this another case of producers turning a non-issue into a storyline? For now, things are looking promising – but as MAFS fans know, only time will tell.
