Behind Natalie Portman’s drop-dead gorgeous Oscars gown was a very important message.

In honour of all the female directors who were snubbed of a nomination this year, the Lucy In The Sky actress— who posed on the red carpet with her husband Benjamin Millepied— embroidered their names onto the edges of her custom made Dior cape.
“I wanted to recognise the women who were not recognised for their incredible work this year,” said Natalie, who has called out Hollywood heavy hitters in the past for overlooking powerful females in the industry.
Despite there being a plethora of female-helmed films in 2019, this year, Greta Gerwig (Little Women), Lorene Scafaria (Hustlers) and Lulu Wang (The Farewell) didn’t receive nominations in the directing category. Instead, Martin Scorsese (The Irishman), Todd Phillips (Joker), Sam Mendes (1917), Quentin Tarantino (Once upon a Time… in Hollywood) and Bong Joon Ho (Parasite) are fighting to win the accolade.
Perhaps the most contentious Oscars snub was Greta Gerwig’s. The incredible director picked up six nods for her flick including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay. However, for some unknown reason, she failed to land a directing nomination.
This isn’t the first time Black Swan star Natalie has spoken out about the lack of female representation in the entertainment business. In 2018, the powerful feminist made headlines when she made note of the fact no females were nominated in the Best Director category at the 75th Annual Golden Globe Awards.
“And here are all the male nominees,” the presenter said before introducing the five men up for the award at the time.
Guillermo Del Toro ended up taking home the award for Shape of Water, beating Martin McDonagh (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri), Christopher Nolan (Dunkirk), Ridley Scott (All the Money in the World) and Steven Spielberg (The Post).
