While last year’s award show was absolutely dominated by Bong Joon-ho’s black comedy meets mystery flick, Parasite, this year’s show seems to have a bit more of an even mix of films predicting to win.

The highly predicted winners of Oscars 2021: Minari (L), Promising Young Woman (C), and Nomadland (R)

Going into the awards show this morning, we’re expecting big things from Minari, a beautifully shot film about a young Korean family trying to make it in America; Nomadland, a gripping drama about a woman in her sixties who, after losing all of her money during the Great Recession, decides to live out her days as a modern-nomad, travelling through the American West in a van; and Promising Young Woman, a knife-turning mystery about a former medical student’s plan to avenge her friend after she was sexually assaulted on campus.

Minari, in particular, is up for six awards, including Best Picture, Best Director (Lee Isaac Chung), Best Actor (Steven Yuen), Best Supporting Actress (Youn Yuh-jung), Best Original Screenplay and Best Original Score.

Judas and the Black Messiah, a film about the true story of Fred Hampton (Daniel Kaluuya), the chairman of the Black Panther Party’s Illinois section in the late 1960s who was betrayed by William O’Neal (Lakeith Stanfield), an FBI informant, is also highly favoured today, too. Both Daniel and Lakeith nominated for Best Supporting Actor – it’s unclear why the two leads of this film weren’t nominated as Best Actor rather than Supporting – along with the film being nominated for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay and Best Cinematography.

The late Chadwick Boseman is also nominated for his posthumous performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

From there, we were also spoiled with some cinematic genius over on Netflix with films like The Trial of the Chicago 7 – which stars honorary Aussie Sacha Baron Cohen – and Mank, which follows famed and flawed screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz (Gary Oldman) as he tries to finish Citizen Kane. Soul is likely to take home the Best Animated Feature, as well.
