My Kitchen Rules has started strong with lots of cooking chaos, and it has already served up some heated drama in the first two episodes.
While the show is known for having some seriously tense moments around the dinner table, not all the fans are happy about the direction it’s taken in recent years.
Many have already threatened to boycott the series after the first week, comparing the show to The Block as they claim the series is more about the “drama” than the cooking.
However, this seems to be a challenge almost every reality show faces these days — to drama, or not to drama — and of course, ratings are steering producers in the direction of the former.
Speaking to WHO, Alisha and Deanne gave their honest thoughts about the show’s drama, particularly after having watched so many of the show’s previous seasons.
My Kitchen Rules fans divided that it’s no longer a ‘cooking show’
This year, The Block has received complaints from fans for being “out of touch” and no longer the affordable home renovation show fans remembered.
Now, My Kitchen Rules (MKR) is getting the same type of heat.
“Now you’ve gone and done it MKR,” one fan wrote online. “This is supposed to be a home cook’s competition.
“Get back to the days when it was fair competition where couples were genuinely there to show their skills.”
“That is the exact reason why I’m not watching The Block this year, because of all the drama and BS from last year,” another agreed. “They seem to forget what these shows were originally for; MKR was for home cooks, and The Block was to build homes.
“But instead, both shows are just bringing out BS drama.”
“Tried watching it but after 15 minutes, no thank you! I have enough drama in my life without this!!!!!” a third chimed in.
However, other viewers called out the irony of these complaints, pointing out that the drama is manufactured “for ratings” and that it “hasn’t been a genuine cooking show for years”.
“They purposely put contestants in to agitate other contestants to make it interesting, and so people complain [but] this is what the producers want, otherwise it could get boring,” one fan replied to negative comments online.
“Very true, I think some people are just negative by nature,” one user agreed. “I love the banter at the table and watch every season to the end!”
“Let’s face it, we’re all here for the drama, failures and the success, all of it!” a third wrote.

Alisha and Deanne knew there would be ‘drama’
While the chaos of reality TV often comes as a shock to many contestants, Alisha and Deanne told WHO that they were expecting it.
“I knew that there would be maybe some personalities that [we] would get along with, and I always knew that there’s always going to be someone that you don’t get along with,” Alisha and Deanne said. “I’ve watched the seasons pretty much every year.”
“There are always some people who aren’t your cup of tea. So, I was expecting there to be people that you don’t hang with.”
