It’s fair to say The Voice fans have a few gripes this season.

From the change in the Blind Audition format that forces the singers to walk away without even so much as a ‘hello’ or ‘well done’ from the judges (now the chairs don’t turn at all if they’re not picked), to accusations that the show is too focused on the coaches, fans have threatened to switch off the popular reality singing show altogether.

Another change that has fans divided is the secret fifth coach, with Tones and I hiding behind the scenes. She has the power to save contestants who didn’t receive a single chair turn and train them for a second chance.

Her role was finally revealed on Sunday, August 30, shocking Coaches Melanie C, Richard Marx, Ronan Keating, and Kate Miller-Heidke with her presence on the show and calling out the judges for “being extra harsh” on the contestants who didn’t receive a single chair turn.

“How lucky are you. You get a second chance,” Richard said to those contestants now standing firmly in Tones and I’s team.

When the second-chance artists returned, many proved they were more than worthy of their place in the competition, with multiple receiving chair turns from the judges.

The stand-out of this group was 26-year-old Georgia Dabbous from Victoria, who earned a four-chair turn with her performance of Jazmine Sullivan’s Bust Your Windows.

Fans call The Voice ‘scripted’ after Tones and I twist

Speaking to WHO ahead of the show’s premiere this year, Kate described Tones and I’s reveal to the coaches as “a major shock”.

“Strap in!” she urged viewers.

Despite the coach’s surprise, fans aren’t buying that they had no idea about Tones and I’s role on the show, calling their reaction “scripted”.

“Stupid twist,” one fan wrote online. “I don’t believe [the coaches] never knew [Tones and I was there].”

“I call bulls–t,” another commented. “It’s all scripted. The producers run the show, not the judges. They know Tones is there; they probably don’t know who she has saved.”

“As if they don’t know she is there,” a third added. “This is so lame!”

The Voice fans defends Tones and I’s place on the show

However, despite not believing the judges’ reactions to the Tones and I twist, fans loved seeing her on the show, and defended her credentials when viewers were questioning her “experience”.

“I seriously don’t want to be mean or nasty,” one fan wrote online. “But Tones and I, what experience has she had?”

“OMG she has so much experience,” one fan responded. “She busked in Queensland for years before being a star; she definitely has loads of international experience.”

“Wow, you are entitled to your opinion, but unfortunately you have no idea what you are talking about nor do you know her history regarding where she once was and where she is today,” another viewer agreed.

“Tones and I had 10 billion streams on her first song which is massive,” another wrote. “I feel she knows what she’s talking about and I would actually love to see her as a judge in the future, we are all entitled to our opinions and we all like different artists which is a good thing!”.
