Beloved Aussie actress Sam Frost is an advocate for mental health, but admits that even she struggles with body image issues.
“I am probably one of the most self-conscious people about my appearance – I can’t even watch myself on screen,” the Home and Away star tells WHO.
“I look at it and pick apart my nose and my face – I look tired, I have bags under my eyes.
“I just have to avoid it because it isn’t healthy – instead of doing my job I’m thinking about what I look like, which isn’t healthy.”
Despite her active work in the space, Sam is still not immune to bad days.
“I didn’t go to the gym for a month because I was dealing with life, and I felt guilty,” she shared.
“I was like … ‘why are you sitting here thinking about not going to the gym when you are grieving?’ We need to give ourselves permission to rest for a week or two weeks without feeling guilty about it,” she said.
Sam, who has been lighting up our screens since 2014 when she appeared on Blake Garvey’s season of The Bachelor, does have tactics to help with how she sees herself.
“I like to know what my boundaries are and I like to try and stay active – and not for my appearance, but because it helps my mental health,” she shares.
“When I feel strong, I am less self-conscious of my image.”
In addition to her acting, Sam has launched Believe by Sam Frost and Stronger by Believe with her sister, Kristine.
Both businesses work to shine a light on mental health issues and self-care, with Stronger going so far as to run workshops for teenage girls that promote healthy body image and confidence.
Although she rose to fame on The Bachelor, Sam’s fame began to take off when she became the country’s first Bachelorette in 2015.
“I haven’t watched it for a long time,” she admits.
However, her interest has been piqued by the newest Bachelorette, Brooke Blurton, who is the first openly bisexual and First Nations person to lead the show.
“I think it’s amazing, I think she is a trailblazer,” Sam says.
As for what advice she would give the new Bachelorette?
“All you can do is be authentic and be yourself, that’s all you need to do,” she advises.
“She seems like a really genuine person. I haven’t met her before but just from things that I’ve seen. I love when I see genuine women have success.”
