The cast list for The White Lotus is just as impressive as the show’s plotlines, but a recent recasting decision has seen one A-list actor snubbed from the show. Season 4, set in the South of France, will revolve around a Cannes Film Festival plotline with “fame” at the centre of it all.
Creator Mike White teased to Entertainment Tonight that this season will be “fun” and “wickedly playful”, but the behind-the-scenes drama of production so far is telling a different story.
On April 25, news broke that Helena Bonham Carter left the set of The White Lotus after just over a week of filming.
According to Variety, her character (Mike White apparently wrote for the Harry Potter star herself) was rewritten and recast after the director felt it “did not align once on set.”
After days of searching and speculation, a new role has been written and cast, and fans are delighted (if not a little surprised) by the result.
Who was cast to replace Helena Bonham Carter?
Laura Dern has joined the cast of The White Lotus season 4, as confirmed by Variety.
The Big Little Lies actress isn’t taking over Bonham Carter’s exact role, as this has been removed completely after her exit.
Instead, Dern will be playing a new character developed by White that better aligns with the plot of the season.
Dern already had an uncredited voice cameo on the hit HBO show in season 2, and her return will bring her and White back together after the pair worked on the HBO series Enlightened.
While fans were excited for Bonham Carter’s feature, they’re certainly not mad about Dern’s casting, with many questioning why she wasn’t featured on the show sooner.
“The drama level just went up instantly,” one fan commented in response to the news.
“Laura Dern makes so much sense,” another fan agreed. “Love her character on Big little Lies.”
“Well, I love both of them,” one viewer responded. “Helena is from a Tim Burton universe and Laura is from a David Lynch universe. So, no hate or comparison from me.”
What actually happened behind-the-scenes that caused Helena Bonham Carter to leave?
While fans are celebrating Dern’s entrance to the show, many are still mourning and questioning Bonham Carter’s departure, and more specifically asking what actually happened on set that caused her to leave.
After the news broke out, a HBO spokesperson confirmed to E! News that the two-time Oscar nominee exited the show as her character did not end up aligning with the rest of the season’s plotline.
“With filming just underway on season four of The White Lotus, it had become apparent that the character which Mike White created for Helena Bonham Carter did not align once on set,” the spokesperson said.
“The role has subsequently been rethought, is being rewritten and will be recast in the coming weeks.”
“HBO, the producers and Mike White are saddened that they won’t get to work with her, but remain ardent fans and very much hope to work with the legendary actress on another project soon.”
While there were claims from undisclosed Daily Mail sources that a “clash with Sandra Bernhard” was the reason behind Bonham Carter’s departure, the Oscar nominee’s team were quick to refute these claims and noted that the two actors didn’t even meet before Bonham Carter’s exit, nor did they have time to clash.
So, while some salacious behind-the-scenes moments would be fitting for the show’s underlying themes, it seems the actor’s departure was nothing but amicable.
