It seems there’s no part of The Block that viewers won’t scrutinise, right down to the contestants’ hair.
This week, Lisa managed to reignite one of the show’s more random recurring debates after admitting she was struggling to get paint out of her hair.
Sitting on the couch at the sharehouse, Lisa was brushing through her locks while “trying to get the paint out of my hair”.
“I should just chop it off at this point, it’s full of paint,” she added.
A perfectly reasonable complaint after spending hours renovating a house. But for The Block fans, it opened the door to a much bigger question: why are so many contestants working with their hair down?
And once viewers started talking about it, there was no shortage of opinions, with Courtney and Sev even weighing into the issue with WHO.
Fans have questions about contestants keeping their hair out
It’s not the first time viewers have questioned the contestants’ hair on site, but Lisa’s paint-covered locks have brought the debate back around again.
One fan said they couldn’t understand how Lisa works with her long hair left down, while another questioned whether it was actually safe to have so much hair loose on a work site.
“That hair would drive me nuts. It’s so long and it can’t be safe on a work site,” one viewer commented.
Another fan widened the conversation to the rest of the cast, pointing out that contestants regularly appear on camera with their hair “down and flowing” while working on the houses.
Then came the inevitable comparison to The Block of old.
“I remember the early seasons when the women didn’t even wear makeup half the time, let alone the full glam of today,” one viewer said.
And when it came to Lisa’s paint problem, at least one fan had a very simple solution.
“Yes, she was trying to brush it last night, complaining of paint in it? Hello, plait it, put a cap on?”
Courtney and Sev have defended the glam look
Of course, not everyone sees the contestants’ hair and makeup as an issue.
House 4’s Courtney and Sev previously spoke to WHO about the criticism contestants face over how they look while renovating, arguing that feeling good about yourself still matters when you’re under that much pressure.
“I couldn’t care less if people have an opinion of that. At the end of the day, like you still want to feel good about yourself,” they said.
“If wearing your hair down makes you feel good about yourself, who gives a crap what anyone else says about it? You can’t really wear your hair up with a hard hat on, anyway… At the end of the day, it’s like whatever’s going to make you feel good in the day, you know, you’re already under so much stress and everything.
“And if you want to wear makeup or you want to wear your hair down, like let us be…. We are not on the power tools. That’s what our trades are there for.”
So while Lisa may have simply been trying to get a bit of paint out of her hair, she’s managed to reopen one of The Block’s more oddly persistent debates. Because apparently, after years of judging room reveals, budgets and questionable styling choices, we’re now judging the contestants’ hairstyles too.
