If there’s one thing we know about The Block‘s House 2, it’s that Chantel and Wyatt really, really like neutrals. The judges, on the other hand? Not quite as sold.
Week after week, the pair have been encouraged to bring in more colour and personality. But Chantel and Wyatt have largely stuck to their own style and the original brief of ‘white, bright and light’. Now, Chantel has explained why she wasn’t willing to change their vision.
It comes after House 1’s Jolene joked that perhaps Chantel and Wyatt needed to “learn how to style”, after their impressive progress sparked the latest cheating allegations on The Block.
But while it might look like House 2 simply decided to ignore the judges, Chantel says that wasn’t the case. They did try taking some of the feedback on board. The problem? It didn’t exactly work out.
Why did Chantel and Wyatt stick with neutrals?
Speaking to WHO, Chantel explained that their overall design direction was locked in pretty early on.
“We wanted the house to feel really cohesive, and ultimately we wanted to sell it for the most money,” she said.
“So even though we needed to win to get more money to make the house better, we didn’t want to completely lose our initial style just because the brief was changing.”
But Chantel was only willing to take the judges’ advice so far.
“I also found it difficult to implement the judges’ advice if I didn’t genuinely agree with their style or taste,” she said. “I tried to make every room something that I loved, even if the judges hated it.”
Which, honestly, is a fair point.
“If I implemented their advice and hated it, and then they hated it at reveal time anyway, I would have just been really upset with myself,” Chantel explained. “At least one of us liked it.”
Chantel and Wyatt did try taking the judges’ advice
It’s not that Chantel and Wyatt completely dismissed the feedback. According to Chantel, the brief seemed to shift week to week. The judges initially pushed the contestants towards bright, light and white spaces.
But as the rooms started looking similar, House 2 decided to commit to the neutral aesthetic they had wanted from the beginning.
And there was one particular week that really cemented her decision “to back [herself] fully”.
“There was one week where we did try to implement a little bit more colour and we got smashed by the judges,” she admitted.
“It didn’t feel good trying to take on their advice, doing something that I didn’t love, and then they hated it as well.”
So, while House 2’s neutral aesthetic might not have been everyone’s cup of tea, Chantel isn’t losing sleep over it.
After all, she’s the one who has to take the finished house to auction. And if she’s going to spend weeks building it from the ground up, she wants to love what she sees at the end. That means staying true to the style she and Wyatt wanted from the beginning.
