Why is Ryan Corr running nude down the main street of a small country town – a flustered police officer in hot pursuit?

The scene from the first episode of Stan’s new Aussie drama, Bloom, left assembled guests at the show’s Sydney premiere gobsmacked – and served as a memorable entry to this sometimes decidedly quirky drama.

The team from WHO’s TV podcast, Binge List, were there – and we’ve got the inside word on this much-anticipated show

Available to stream from January 1, the six-parter stars Jacki Weaver, Bryan Brown, Phoebe Tonkin and, of course, Ryan – and deals with the very strange aftermath of a devastating flood that killed five residents of the town of Mullan.

An unusual plant that springs up in the wake of the tragedy is the catalyst that brings surprising change to the survivors – most notably former actress Gwen (Weaver), who has been suffering the effects of Alzheimer’s disease, and her struggling partner Ray (Brown).

Corr’s character, Sam, isn’t all nudity and cheeky smiles – he’s a challenging fellow; a violent thief and a roguish shagger, and an immediate source of chaos and menace who throws the shaken town into further disorder.

Most of the acting in Bloom is very good, and the writing is clever. I adored the return of Anne Charleston as Loris, with the veteran actress effortlessly capturing ever scene she’s in. Twelve-year-old loner Isaac (Thomas Fisher) is an excellently quirky character, whose connection with Sam looks set to deliver plenty of compelling moments.

The suspension of disbelief required to accept the show’s transformative central premise is mostly easily achieved, thanks to compelling storytelling and some great emotional moments.

Where the show goes after its winning first episode remains to be seen, but there’s plenty of promise on display here, and every reason to believe that Bloom will be an Aussie show worth watching.
