Hair loss can happen for any number of reasons: stress, hormonal changes, post-childbirth, perimenopuase … the list goes on.
No matter the reason, if you hair is thinning or becoming patchy it can be devastating. Surprisingly it’s fairly common among both men and women.
Fortunately, there are a huge number of products that can help. Some contain chemicals, many are naturally derived so you won’t be limited by choice.
Here are our recommendations for the best shampoos for hair loss.

#7 Aveda Invati
Aveda’s Invati Advanced System contains an exfoliating shampoo, thickening conditioner and activating scalp revitaliser.
Made from 94% natural ingredients Aveda’s Invati, when used as a complete treatment, is said to reduce hair loss by 53%.
It’s cruelty free and helps support your hair’s natural production of keratin but doesn’t get consistently good reviews, possibly due to a recent revamp of the formula.
Lisa from Perth says “I have been using the Invati system for 6 years and loved it. My hair is fine and quite thin and the original formula was light, srengthened my hair and made it look fuller. The new formula is very heavy and makes my hair oily and limp. I am no longer using this product and degusted that Aveda have completely changed something that was so good and an answer to my hair problems, into just another disappointing unusable hair product.”
RRP $194

#6 Sebamed Anti Hair Loss Shampoo
Soap-free and alkaline-free Sebamed Anti-Hair Loss Shampoo is a regular drugstore product and is at the cheaper end of the scale.
It contains caffeine and Gingko Biloba to help stimulate new hair growth.
An amazon.com reviewer says, “I have noticed about a 30% decrease of my usual hair loss. It leaves my hair highly conditioned as well. However, after the 3rd or 4th use I I started to notice a build up in my hair causing double the time to dry and appeared greasy before than usual.”
RRP $13.99

#5 Kerastase Densifique
Kerastase Densifique contains 30 x 6ml vials of Stemoxydene which is said to stimulate hair regrowth by increasing the amount of oxygen to the scalp.
Reviewers seem to love it.
Pretty Kitty 1 says, “Densifique works, which is both a good and bad thing. It took a full two and a half to three months for me to see any change, but I do have a lot of new growth in areas that have been thin and at times even patchy for years.”
“I also noticed my hair got quite a bit longer within the trial, seeming to grow at a faster rate than is normal for me.”
RRP $160

#4 Nioxin System 1
Nioxin has been around for 30 years and was created when the founder, Eva Graham, experienced thinning hair after the birth of her first child.
There are 6 systems to choose from depending on how much hair loss you have and whether your hair is coloured or natural.
Nioxin System 1 is for non-coloured fine hair with light thinning. If you’re hair loss is more progressive, use System 2.
Cristina says, “I lost a lot of hair due to stress, but this shampoo helped me a lot. Best for all types of scalp. I would improve this product by creating a 3 in 1 shampoo, conditioner & treatment. I am buying this product for over 4 years and will continue to do so.”
RRP $67

#3 Pump Derma Hair Growth Roller Pack
If you have noticeable thinning hair then Pump has a full range of hair growth products suitable for men and women.
This Derma Hair Growth pack comes with a roller which helps stimulate the scalp for improved results. “This handheld device has 540 small surgical needles 1.5mm in length. The needles are attached to a wheel and (when rolled over the scalp) cause microscopic wounds that activate the skin’s natural healing response.”
It hurts but it works.
Dawn from NSW says; “I can feel a difference after the first wash and my hair doesn’t get greasy, like it used to.”
