What is glycolic acid?

Ever heard of alpha-hydroxy acids, also known as AHAs? Well, glycolic is one of those.

“Glycolic acid is the strongest of AHA acids due to its small molecule size and is highly soluble in water, and a popular skincare ingredient,” says Dr Naomi McCullum, renowned Australian cosmetic physician and founder of Dr Naomi Skin.

What can glycolic acid do for my skin?

Dead outer skin cells often tend to outstay their welcome, glued to your complexion.

“Glycolic acid works to break the bonds between the outer layer of skin cells, including dead skin cells, and the next skin cell layer. This creates a peeling effect that can make the skin appear smoother and more even,” explains Dr McCullum.

How to add glycolic acid into your skincare regimen

Ready to get your glow on? It’s important to start slow with products containing a low concentration of glycolic acid.

“If you’re new to chemical exfoliants or active skincare you should work up to using it every day slowly rather than overdoing it at the beginning,” says Dr McCullum.

Who is glycolic acid suitable for?

Pretty much everyone!

“In theory it should suit all skin types and it’s one ingredient that you should definitely consider adding to your skincare playbook,” says Dr McCullum.
