As the stars grace the very first red carpet of the new year at the Golden Globes, one undeniable truth has been solidified – the return of the ‘messy smokey eye’ is now officially back.

For those of us who lined our eyes with heavy liner and embraced the grunge of it all back in the early 2010s (inspired by the 90s of course), this is a welcome but perhaps confronting realisation that all trendy truly do come back around.

We were hooked when 2007-set fashion frenzy that was Saltburn brought us Venetia’s covetable messy makeup look and the sartorial set has been whispering about the return of ‘indie sleaze’ for months, for which a smokey eye is a staple.

But when star in the making and Barbie alum Ariana Greenblatt graced the Golden Globes carpet with what we can only call the perfect undone beauty look, we knew we had to jump on board.

Darkside waterproof gel liner, $31, Anastasia Beverly Hills

The most important step of a good smokey eye is a quality liner. Run a messy line across your lash line with a blendable formula such as this waterproof liner from the experts at Anastasia Beverly Hills, and extend the line towards your temples. When trying to nail a winged liner you want to aim for the top of your ear.
