2023 has been the year of the beauty trend. From the fresh-faced strawberry girl, latte makeup and the Euphoria-esque looks of The Idol, we’ve been testing and trying all the beauty looks the year has had to offer.
But as the year wraps up we’re looking to the future and predicting what we expect to see from the world of beauty this summer.
From bold graphic liner to rosy cheeks and Y2K hairdos, we’re expecting a return to the fun and fabulous with the right injection of natural glow this summer.
We chatted with Adore Beauty‘s resident social media manager and professional makeup artist, Megan Miloshis, to pick her brain about the hottest makeup, hair and skin trends to keep an eye out for this coming summer.
The best summer beauty trends for 2024
Bold graphic liner
This summer, we’re spicing up our beauty game by experimenting with vibrant eyeliner in a bunch of eye-popping colours. Think greens, blues, yellows, and even white to really make those eyes stand out. To nail the look, go for a fresh, natural glow on the skin. That way, all the attention will be on that sharp eyeliner, making a bold statement.
“I find it’s a much more approachable way to incorporate colour into your routine than, say, eyeshadow, but still gives you that desired pop of something extra. You can be as subtle or as festive as you like with it, too – it really depends on the size of the ‘wing’ you create and the hue of the liner itself,” says Megan.
“A baby step into this can look like mixing one of [your] fave coloured shadows with some setting spray to create a paste-like liner. From there, line away and enjoy a hint of fun as your eyes flutter through summer.”
If you want to stick to a classic black, opt for sculptural shapes to add a point of difference and enhance the eye.
NYX Professional Makeup Vivid Brights eyeliner, $20.99, Adore Beauty
NYX know their stuff when it comes to technical products that deliver on quality. This liquid liner not only comes in an array of bold and beautiful hues to choose from but the tapered brush tip makes it great for precision work and a sharp winged eye.
Fenty Glitty Lid eyeliner, $36, Sephora
Don’t stop with just colour, add some glitz with a coloured glitter liner like this long-wearing and smudge-proof formula from Fenty Beauty. Because if anyone is going to create a glitter liner you’ll be wearing well into the night, it’s Rihanna.
MAC Colour Excess gel pencil liner, $48, Adore Beauty
If it’s a more blown-out messy look you’re going for, grab a coloured gel eyeliner like this one from MAC and smudge out using a tapered smudge brush to create a subtle wash above the lash line.
Liquid liner, $31, Anastasia Beverly Hills
You can always stick to black and instead branch out with bold liner shapes like the batwing (great for hooded eyes) or even a 60s floating wing for some vintage glamour. This formula is super longlasting as it is waterproof and a true black matte, the tapered tip makes for easy work too.
Natural skin
To compliment these bolder statement looks be it eyes or lips, we are seeing natural and softer skin as the new look to achieve. Skin tints and lightweight formulas replace heavier, higher coverage foundations that complement blown-out blushes that go from the apple of the cheeks up to the temples to create a truly lit-from-within glow.
“Glossy hair, skincare-infused makeup products and rosy cheeks will be standouts we can expect to see dominate this summer,” Megan mentions.
Base primer, $65, Holme Beauty
Start your makeup with a sheer glowy primer that can work standalone or under foundation like this one from Holme Beauty. It has a sheer wash of colour that evens skin tone and very subtle shimmer to reflect light and create a glow.
Golden Glow SPF50+ Dreamscreen, $49, Airyday
Create a satin finish for your base with this silky and luminous formula that is packed with skin-loving ingredients as well as SPF to prevent sun damage.
Perfecting skin tint, $49, Glossier
For the perfect no-makeup makeup look you can’t go past this ultra-sheer formula from Glossier which is a fave of Riverdale’s Camila Mendes. It’s a watery texture that expertly blends across the skin but still allows your real skin to poke through.
BFF De-Stress, $75, Trinny London
This is a great option for a multitude of skin types but particularly for anyone after a hit of hydration and radiant finish, this is a game-changer. It has hyaluronic acid to nourish the skin and comes in a wide array of skin tones to suit all.
Seeing red
“[What] I’m really keeping an eye on as an emerging trend is the colour red in makeup looks. We’re seeing it dominate in fashion right now – just look at Kendall Jenner in that red floor-length gown at the Academy Museum Gala in Los Angeles. I can see graphic liners, red lips and red hair accessories on the horizon for 2024,” Megan emphasises.
If you’re looking for wearable ways to incorporate red into your beauty looks, there are plenty of ways to play with the bold hue. Opt for bold red blushes that give your cheeks a sunkissed glow (no sun damage, promise!). For green eyes, a smudged deep maroon liner along the lash line works like magic. And you can’t go wrong with a red lip—it’s a classic, foolproof statement look – or you can go for a sheerer red gloss for something a little more subtle.
Benefit Cosmetics Love Tint, $38, The Iconic
If you’re after something subtle yet buildable you can’t go past this cult product from benefit that delivers a flattering wash of colour to the cheeks and lips and can be layered for extra opacity. It looks like you took a bite from a berry and dapped juic on your cheeks – delish!
Embodiment blush, $55, Holme Beauty
For something deeper, this shimmery berry-toned cream blush from Holme creates the ideal sheen on the cheeks that melts into the skin rather than sitting unnaturally on top of it. The ingredients like jojoba seed oil, vitamin E and Kakadu plum seed extract will have your skin thanking you.
Walk of No Shame eyeliner, $45, Charlott Tilbury
Swipe this creamy, blendable eyeliner across the lash line and blend it out with a smudge brush to create a sultry and seductive eye look in moments.
Retro matte lipstick in Ruby Woo, $37, MAC
If you’re looking to achieve the perfect red lip you can hardly look past MAC’s iconic Ruby Woo matte lipstick. It’s a blue-toned red so it’s the closest you’ll get to that covetable Marilyn Monroe look, it’s also long lasting and has an intense colour payoff that sits comfortably on the lips.
Y2K locks
In fashion trends repeat every twenty years and in beauty, we often take style cues from decades past to strike new inspiration. When it comes to hair it is all about the hair accessories a la Y2K with the old-school butterfly and claw clips, along with statement styles like braiding, buns and mermaid waves.
Megan’s advice? “Think accessories like headbands, ribbons on ponytails, sleek up-dos, deep side parts and effortless bobs on the rise. For our bouncy blowout lovers: don’t worry I can’t see the soft butterfly cut going anywhere in 2024.”
Rubi Lily hair claw, $9.09 (was $12.99), Cotton On
The cutest claw clip you ever did see, adorned with diamonte cherries, this claw clip is the perfect way to add something extra to a basic hair look.
Kinski hair bow pack, $16, Princess Polly
The coquette aesthetic isn’t going anywhere, and a must-have piece of this trend is the bows. Pop these adorable baby pink ribbons the end of plaits, to top off a ponytail or even space buns.
Mermade Hair PRO Waver, $109, Adore Beauty
Beachy, wavy, mermaid hair has made a comeback as of late with stars like Gigi Hadid and Sydney Sweeney leading the pack, and it’s never been easier to achieve the look thanks to this tool from Mermade Hair.
So Sublime! Hydro repair serum, $39.95, Unwritten

Summer ready skin
The quintessential part of any summer skincare routine is of course SPF and plenty of hydration.
“Sun protection should be your first priority when it comes to looking after your skin, especially in the summer months. Ensure you’re applying SPF every time you leave the house/are exposed to sun, especially on your face.”
Spending time in the sun, wind and sea can leave skin tired and in need of some TLC, ensure to invest in an ultra-nourishing moisturiser, as well as treatments like toners or serums.

This makes a great daily application that nourishes with glycerin and other hydrating ingredients while it slows the rate of water loss from the skin, without feeling heavy and uncomfortable. You can even shop Booster Sachets to mix in the water that can help depuff, add glow or calm angry skin.
