When I first planned my road trip through California, Mammoth Lakes wasn’t even on my radar. As an Aussie traveller, my itinerary leaned toward the usual suspects: Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Yosemite.

But after finding myself in Mammoth Lakes—it turned out to be the best decision of my trip. Here’s a breakdown of my whirlwind three-day trip, complete with tips for making the most of your own Mammoth Lakes adventure.

Where is Mammoth Lakes, and why should you visit?

Mammoth Lakes is a charming mountain town tucked into California’s Eastern Sierra region. Known for its world-class skiing in winter, it’s just as magical in warmer months, offering a mix of outdoor adventures, incredible dining, and breathtaking landscapes.

I visited in September, and even though it’s a renowned ski town, the start of fall was absolutely perfect. The crisp air, golden-hued foliage, and tranquil vibe made it an idyllic getaway and the weather remained mild as I drove the Tioga Pass Road from Yosemite.

Where did I stay in Mammoth Lakes?

I checked into The Village Lodge, a cozy yet luxurious hub in the heart of Mammoth Lakes. The location couldn’t be better: walking distance to fantastic restaurants, shops, and outdoor activities. Parking was a breeze, and the mountain chalet vibes made it feel like a true alpine getaway – even if there wasn’t any snow.

After checking in, I headed to Gomez’s Mexican Restaurant. Known for its signature ‘Mammoth Margarita’ and an impressive collection of nearly 1,000 tequilas, Gomez’s serves up Mexican fusion dishes with a vibrant atmosphere to match.

Breakfast at Old New York Bagel

Saturday morning began with a delicious bagel from Old New York Bagel. Their commitment to fresh, organic ingredients made every bite feel special and rumour has it, Adam Sandler is known to frequent the spot on his family vacations… so keep an eye out!

What activities are a must in Mammoth Lakes?

Mountain Coaster at Woolly’s Adventure Summit

Saturday morning was all about adrenaline as I rode the new Mountain Coaster at Woolly’s Adventure Summit. With speeds up to 40 km/h and sweeping mountain views, this activity is pure fun and truly brings out the child in everyone.

Since the warmer weather meant no snow sports during our trip, this was the perfect way to still add some thrill to our itinerary.

E-Bike Adventure Around the Lakes

In the afternoon, I rented an e-bike and cycled around Mammoth Lakes. The scenic routes took me past crystal-clear lakes and lush forest trails on the 5.3-mile Lakes Basin Path. The views were jaw-dropping at every turn, from towering peaks to tranquil water reflections.

What makes Mammoth Lakes special?

Beyond the activities and food, what really stood out to me was the warmth of the locals. Everyone I met, from shop owners to restaurant staff, was incredibly friendly and eager to share their love for this mountain paradise.

The wildlife added a touch of adventure too. While I didn’t spot any bears (a relief, honestly), I did see playful chipmunks and even a coyote—a total win for an Aussie used to kangaroos and kookaburras!
