It’s been one week since the Duke and Duchess of Sussex shocked the world by announcing they would be splitting from the royal family. And now, insiders have come forward to reveal that the “backstabbing” and “toxic” atmosphere was the final nail in the coffin for Meghan and Harry’s decision to quit royal life.

“Meghan knew life as a royal wouldn’t be easy,” the source says. “But nothing prepared her for the constant criticism and drama and backstabbing that goes on behind palace doors,” a source told Us Weekly.
Furthermore, insiders say that Prince Harry personally felt responsible for his wife’s misery.
“To say he’s upset about the way the royals and the U.K. press have treated Meghan is an understatement,” the source continued.
Another source revealed to People that Harry and Meghan’s shock exit wasn’t the way the royal couple wanted things to go, however they didn’t feel they had a choice.
“This is not how they wanted to handle this, but Meghan and Harry’s hand was forced,” a royal insider told People.
“There is so much bad blood in that family—it’s toxic. If relationships had been better, things would have been different.”
On January 8, Harry and Meghan made an official announcement that they would be stepping down as “senior” members of the royal family.
“After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen,” the couple said in a statement posted to their Instagram account.
“It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment. We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages.”
A senior royal source said the Queen and her family were ‘deeply disappointed’. Another said the royals were ‘shocked, saddened and downright furious’ at the couple, reports the Daily Mail.
