From barely-there polish to ultra-glossy buffed nails, Sarah Jessica Parker has proved that the Bare Manicure trend is timeless. Often seen without any polish on her nails, SJP is living proof that understated beauty can still turn heads.
As minimalist manicures take over salons, TikTok feeds and celebrity mood boards alike, Cheryl Cooke, OPI ANZ Educator, told WHO why everyone is suddenly embracing the naked aesthetic and how to perfect the look yourself.
“The bare manicure focuses on enhancing your natural nails rather than covering them,” Cooke tells WHO. “It features perfectly groomed, short to medium length nails with tidy cuticles, a buffed high shine surface, and no polish at all.”
Why is the Bare Manicure trending?
‘Quiet luxury’ is very much in, and that’s why this nail trend is back.
“This year the trend exploded as a symbol of luxury,” Cooke says. “Bare nails signal confidence to invest in genuine nail health rather than constant maintenance.”

Do you still need to go to the salon?
“You can still visit a professional salon for maintenance, but the frequency and focus changes,” Cooke explains. “Aim for every three to four weeks for a professional bare nails manicure. This includes expert cuticle work, gentle shaping, buffing for shine, and most importantly a strengthening treatment.”
Top tips for keeping your nails healthy
These are Cooke’s top tips for keeping your nails in tip-top condition.
- Moisturise relentlessly – Cuticle oil & hand cream daily.
- Diet & supplements – Collagen, and a balanced diet rich in biotin (eggs, nuts, salmon).
- Protect from damage – Gloves for household chores, such as cleaning, washing dishes and gardening.
- Use strengthening base coats.
How to remove unwanted stains or colour from your nails?
“Yellowing or staining from dark polishes or environmental factors can ruin the bare look,” Cooke tells WHO. “To restore clarity safely, you can soak your nails in a bowl of fresh lemon juice and warm water, and gently brush with a soft nail brush.”
Alternatively, Cooke adds that you can use a peroxide-based whitening toothpaste. Simply brush nails gently, let sit for two to three minutes, and rinse.
