First it was her father, now it’s her fans trying to rule her life. But are they right to be worried?

Her conservatorship may have been terminated in 2021, but Britney Spears still appears to be battling for her freedom.

The 41-year-old recently hit out at concerned followers after they contacted cops to do a welfare check when she deactivated her Instagram account days after declaring she was changing her name to River Red.

“I’m shocked as hell that when I took my Instagram down, fans got worried and sent the cops to my house,” she blasted on Twitter on January 28.

“It really was uncalled for … I adore my fans, but for those who did that aren’t real fans and I honestly felt like it was a way to make me look bad.”

The singer continued her rant, admitting she quit the social media site after an influx of negative comments.

“I shut down my Instagram because there were too many people saying I looked like an idiot dancing and that I looked crazy,” she shared.

“I was doing my best, but it disturbed me to see people freely talk about it on TV … yep, it hurt my feelings. I’m sensitive and honestly I would rather take a break and do my ice-cream diet anyway … I know I thought it was a joke, too … but it’s not … it works … surprisingly enough!!!”

It’s erratic posts like this, coupled with more legal battles, that have kept Britney in the spotlight since the dramatic end to her controversial legal arrangement.

Having been kept under the conservatorship since 2008, her life and finances tightly controlled by her father, Jamie Spears, and a group of lawyers, many thought its end in November 2021 would see the star able to live her life with the freedom she has desperately craved for so long.

But the momentous day only marked the beginning of yet another turbulent year.

In fact, less than a month after the conservatorship was lifted, legal fights over the singer’s financial matters and the alleged surveillance of her personal space began, with her attorney, Mathew Rosengart, accusing Jamie of mishandling her fortune and failing to take any accountability for the years that she spent under his control.

“Whether he believes it or not, whether he accepts it or not, his daughter feels traumatised by what she went through at his hands for more than a decade,” the lawyer said at the time.

While her attorneys continue to fight for justice, Britney has been waging her own war against family and fans.

The singer’s long-running spats with her mother Lynne and younger sister Jamie Lynn have only reached new heights, erupting just days after her guardianship ended.

“I was nothing more than a puppet to my family,” she shared last March.

“I was treated less than, demoralised and embarrassed … nobody should ever be treated the way I was … The reason I bring this up is because ending the conservatorship is a huge deal, but come on … THAT’S IT??? They all got away with it!!!”

The star has regularly opened up on her Instagram page about the years she was held “captive”.

Along with her rambling and often incoherent posts, the star frequently shares videos of herself dancing and minimally censored nude snaps, which her ex-husband, Kevin Federline, claimed in an August interview embarrassed their two sons, Sean Preston, 17, and Jayden, 16.

Her younger son also opened up in his own TV tell-all a month later.

“Social media helps her … So if that’s what she wants to do, that’s what she wants to do. I’m not going to hate her for that. At the same time, she should come to the realisation of whatever it is that stops her loving her family,” he said in his interview with ITV News.

“It’s almost like she has to post something on Instagram to get some attention.

This has gone on for years and years and years, and there’s a high chance that this will never stop, but I’m hoping for me that she will stop.”

While there have been many highs for Britney this past year – her wedding to long-time beau Sam Asghari, 29, last June and her highly anticipated return to music in August with a collaboration with Sir Elton John – the lows have still managed to hit the star thick and fast.

In May, she suffered a miscarriage of her “miracle baby early in the pregnancy”, and in November, Britney revealed she has incurable nerve damage as a result of minimal oxygen intake.

Just last month, onlookers also claimed that the star had a “meltdown” at a Los Angeles restaurant, where she allegedly spoke “gibberish” and appeared “manic”.

However, the singer claimed she was simply “a little drunk”.

And despite fans’ continued concern over her safety, Britney has remained defiant. “It is what it is … nope I’m not having a breakdown,” she recently shared.

“I am who I am and moving forward in my life. I have never felt better!!!”
