Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker’s journey to expand their brood has been well documented on The Kardashians. The pair, who got married in 2022, each have children from prior relationships and have kept fans up to date on their fertility struggles as they experiment with natural treatments and IVF.
The premiere episode of The Kardashians season three saw Kourtney reveal the hard reality of the process, sharing that even freezing your eggs is never a true safety net.
“When I was 38 or 39 everyone was like pushing me to do that (freeze her eggs),” she shared. “Most of mine didn’t survive the thaw because eggs are one cell, and none of them made it into an embryo.”
“The freezing of the eggs isn’t guaranteed,” Kourtney explained. “And I think that that’s like a misunderstanding.”
“People do it thinking that it’s like a safety net and it’s not.”
The reality star also shared more detail on how physically demanding the IVF process was, saying: “My health is still impacted because it’s hormones, and mentally it definitely took a toll…I think being happy is what’s important and being a good parent to my kids. We’re just embracing that whatever is meant to be, will be.”
The couple also announced in the episode that they were officially stopping the IVF process, explaining that they were leaving their future family plans to fate.
“We are officially done with IVF,” Kourtney announced. “We would love a baby more than anything, but I just really believe in what God has in store for us. If that’s a baby, then I believe that it will happen.”
The season, which continues to air weekly was recorded in 2022, and whilst fans watch the couple’s fertility struggles on screen – in real life the couple have announced they are expecting!
On June 18 2023, Kourtney shared the exciting announcement during a Blink 182 concert, holding up a sign to her drummer beau that read, “Travis I’m Pregnant.”
Shortly after, the pair took to Instagram to share some photos, with Kourtney captioning the gallery, “Overwhelmed with gratitude and joy for God’s blessing and plan.”
The couple first started seeking fertility treatments in 2021, documenting their egg retrieval process on earlier seasons of The Kardashians. “The fertility journey, Travis and I stay in the moment with it and just do the steps we need to do,” Kourtney shared. “It’s nice to hear good news and have some positivity, so we love that but we just wait to hear the final thoughts from Dr. Wood once he receives my blood work and really gets to look at the follicles.”
However, the couple announced in the following episode that the process was unsuccessful. “He was able to retrieve the egg but it didn’t make it to the embryo stage,” Kourtney explained.
In December 2022, Kourtney updated fans on her fertility treatments, revealing that she had taken a break from the physically-demanding IVF process. Taking to Instagram, she shared that she was feeling like herself after stopping IVF treatments for 10 months.
“Finally started getting my energy back 10 months after stopping IVF,” she wrote in an Instagram story, “or anyone else going through it, it gets better!”
Both Kourtney and Travis have been open about their experiences, with Kourtney routinely hitting back at comments addressing her weight fluctuation.
“Obviously my body’s changed. But it was all of the hormones that the doctors put me on,” she shared on an episode of the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast.
“Having a partner who is so supportive of me and always complimenting me, no matter what, it’s just helped me to really embrace the changes and actually to the point where I love the changes now,” she added.
In November, Travis told GQ in that the couple had made a decision to talk about IVF to normalize the process, especially for men who might be unaware of their part.
“If any of that can help people — seeing Kourtney’s journey through IVF, which is super hard for a woman. You saw her struggle with it and talk about it. That’s real,” he told the publication. “I don’t care if I’m c**ming in a cup or whatever. It’s real life… And there’s however many millions of dudes that have to go give their semen for this same procedure. So it’s, like, relatable, you know? I’ve never been fazed by any of that.”
