You have to admit, the MAFS weddings always look very glamorous.
From the designer dresses to the lavish venues, the Channel Nine team always do a good job setting up the contestants’ big days.
But are those weddings real and legally binding? We have the answers.
What happens on MAFS?
It’s been labelled the ultimate social experiment where experts John Aiken, Mel Schilling and Alessandra Rampolla aim to match couples based on science, psychology and personal values.
However, it’s not always happily ever after. In fact more often than not, it just drama (and more drama).
From love at first sight at the altar to explosive dinner parties and scandals galore, the couples navigate intimacy, trust and temptation under intense public scrutiny.

Are the weddings on MAFS real?
While they look pretty convincing, the weddings in Australia are fake.
Instead, the couples make a commitment to each other to ride out the experiment together.
At the end of the series, if they make it through all of the weekly commitment ceremonies with the experts and choose not to leave the experiment, they have another commitment ceremony in the style of a vow renewal and decide if they want to continue their relationship in the real world.
When asked if the MAFS weddings were real by Now To Love, a Nine spokesperson confirmed, “They are not.”

What’s more, the Australian Marriage Act requires couples to notify the court one month and one day ahead of their wedding.
Since the couples meet at the altar, this isn’t possible on a show like MAFS, however, there is one real aspect to the weddings – the celebrants.
“They’re definitely not actors, no… they are professional celebrants,” Nine Programming exec Hamish Turner told TV Tonight in 2025.
Have past MAFS couples married for real after the show?
While the show is known for its drama, there have been some bonafide love stories from the show.
Several couples including season six’s Cam Merchant and Jules Robinson, season eight’s Bryce Ruthven and Melissa Rawson, and Johnny Balbuziente and Kerry Knight have legally tied the knot since getting matched up on the show.
Cam and Jules even chose to have their official wedding in 2019 on A Current Affair and invited former co-stars Heidi Latcham, Nic Jovanovic and Cyrell Paule to their ceremony.
