MAFS groom Steven Danyluk, who married Rachel Gilmore on the show, has been open about not being the most confident person, even telling WHO that his lack of confidence made him his “own worst enemy” while filming the reality TV show last year.
However, viewers might be surprised to learn that shy Steven was previously in a band, and not just any kind of band but a metal band!
Steven’s major transformation from ‘metalhead’ to MAFS groom
Speaking to WHO, Steven said, “Everyone knows I’m a big, passionate fisherman, but I’m also an extreme metal drummer.
“So before I came on MAFS, I had hair down to here [references below his shoulders], and I was a big metalhead!”
The groom continued, “[I had] black hair, piercings – I’ve got holes all over my face. So I looked like one of those weirdos walking down the street – you know, wearing all black.”
He wasn’t lying, check out these pictures:

“So, on a Saturday night, I’ll be at a metal gig – the most extreme music on the planet – and the next day I’ll be on the golf course!
“Quite abstract things there – extreme metal and golf – opposite ends of the spectrum on that one.”
Steven spent most of his 20s chasing his dream of being a famous rock star, however, he now spends his time rocking on boats as he runs his own boat maintenance business.
What did Steven learn on MAFS?
Steven told WHO the biggest thing he learned from the MAFS experts is something he’ll take with him forever.
“I guess the best piece of advice I got from the experts is have more self-confidence, I’m my own worst enemy!
“It’s amazing when you start believing in yourself and don’t doubt yourself, things just aren’t that bad, so have some self-confidence.”
It wasn’t just the experts who told Steven he needed more confidence, “It became apparent very early on – my partner said it to me, the group said it to me and the experts said it to me. So writing’s on the wall isn’t it!”

Steven candidly told producers when he first joined the show that he had “got insecurities and vulnerabilities,” and those came through extensively while he was on dating apps before joining the show.
“I’m not the fittest guy in the world, I’m not the tallest guy in the world. That might make people swipe left. If I could be six foot three, I’d do it. I’m very aware I’m far from perfect,” he adds. “She might not like me!”
Rachel felt similarly, telling producers, “I’ve not experienced a man making me feel beautiful. I long for it.”
Let’s hope these two can make things work!
