Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer were brutally murdered in their Los Angeles home on December 14, 2025.

The couple’s 32-year-old son Nick has since been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and was scheduled to be arraigned on January 7, 2026.

However, Nick’s arraignment has been delayed until February 23 as the defence attorney dropped his case.

High-profile attorney, Alan Jackson, was initially representing Nick in the stabbing death of his parents.

However, on Wednesday, Jackson asked to be replaced by a public defender.

The well-known attorney has represented everyone from disgraced director Harvey Weinstein, to controversial actor Kevin Spacey and Karen Read, a woman who was acquitted this year of murdering her boyfriend in Massachusetts.

Why did Alan Jackson quit Nick Reiner’s case?

A source told The New York Times that Jackson conferred with Judge Theresa McGonigle in her chambers and said that he felt he had “no choice” but to withdraw from the case.

Giving a statement outside of a Los Angeles courthouse on Wednesday, Jackson explained his reason for leaving the case.

“Circumstances beyond our control and more importantly circumstances beyond Nick’s control have dictated that, sadly, it’s made it impossible to continue our representation of Nick,” he said.

However, Jackson added that after weeks of investigation, “what we’ve learned, and you can take this to the bank, is that pursuant to the laws of this state, pursuant to the law of California, Nick Reiner is not guilty of murder. Print that.”

The Times also suggested that the Reiner family may have distanced themselves from Nick and his legal case financially.

In a statement to The Times, a spokesman for the Reiner family said: “They have the utmost trust in the legal process and will not comment further on matters related to the legal proceedings.”

Following Jackson’s decision to step down from the case, Nick will now be represented by public defender Kimberly Greene.

When did Nick Reiner appear in court?

Nick appeared in a Los Angeles court for the first time on December 17 and according to the courtroom sketch artist was wearing a blue suicide vest and a sombre expression.

The 32-year-old is said to have offered no sense of remorse during his brief court appearance, instead staring straight ahead whilst he was stood shackled behind a glass wall.

Uttering only three words after allegedly brutally murdering his parents, Nick simply responded to the judge’s question to “waive his right to a speedy trial,” and said: “Yes, your honour.”
