Last season’s country “tree-change” was a challenge-and-a-half for contestants and with some disappointing final auction results, it would be enough to put anyone off applying for the show.
But not Kristy and Brett! The Adelaide couple were avidly watching the series when they decided they had to apply for The Block 2023.
“I don’t actually know why Gisborne made us want to apply,” Brett, 34, joked to WHO.
The safety adviser had a trade secret he hoped would give the pair a leg up. And while project manager Kristy, also 34, has a competitiveness that may ruffle feathers, the couple insisted they’re not afraid to be themselves.
“We just stick to who we are and we’ll see that out the whole way,” Brett adds.
Drama aside, the pair’s Block journey ended on a bitter note, after the couple won a profit of $65,000.
“We came on for an experience and we didn’t come on for the money,” Kristy told WHO following her auction. “We’re not mad at the price…$60,000 is a lot of money to some people.”
So how will the couple spend their winnings? “We didn’t make any [money],” Kirty claims. “We lost more coming on the show than we made, tenfold.”
“We just wanted to make back the money of our incomes that we took off,” she adds. “Just to break even because all in all we wanted the experience…to get back to where we were would have been great.”

Backyard and Pool
This week, the five couples tackled landscaping. With drama behind the scenes continuing to brew and finances getting tight, the teams had a tough week.
With just half a point difference between the top two teams, Steph and Gian took out the win with 38 out of 40 points.
Although the judges had great first impressions when judging Kristy and Brett’s backyard space, Dave Franklin pointed out flaws in the design and less-than-perfect execution.
The pair were awarded a score of 28 out of 40.

Upstairs bathroom and redo rooms
This week, the five couples tackled not one but two rooms; the upstairs bathroom and a ‘re-do’ of a room of their choice. With drama behind the scenes continuing to brew the teams had a tough week. Whilst Eliza and Liberty took out the win, Kristy and Brett were unable to present a finished room.
Kristy and Brett did not deliver a completed room this week on The Block, showing the judges an unfinished downstairs bathroom. Their upstairs bathroom was also incomplete, leading the judges to give House No. 3 the lowest score of the week.
The pair were awarded a score of 18.5 out of 30.

Kids’ Rooms Week
This week, the five couples tackled not one but two children’s rooms. With drama behind the scenes continuing to brew, the teams had a tough week, but all five ultimately delivered stunning rooms.
Steph and Gian took out the win this week with perfect full marks.
The judges admitted that Kristy and Bret put in a really got effort this week but their paintwork was far from perfect.
The pair were awarded a score of 27.5 out of 30.

Master Ensuite Bathroom Week
This week of the season saw the five couples tackle another difficult space on The Block – the master ensuite bathroom.
Amidst a week of high tension and a lot of drama, both Eliza and Liberty and Kristy and Brett tied for first place.
The judges praised Kristy and Brett’s space, agreeing that it connected well to the rest of the house. The judges didn’t have much else to say, which is probably the best feedback the team have received all season.
The pair were awarded a score of 28 out of 30.

Kitchen and Laundry week
The seventh week of the season saw the five couples tackle another massive space on The Block – the Kitchen and Laundry.
Eliza and Liberty took out their first win of the season with a near-perfect room, scoring 29 out of 30 points.
The burgundy bench top was a huge hit with the judges and Kristy and Brett’s space was functional and elegant. A near-perfect week, with the judge’s only critique being the size of the dining table, dining chairs and island bench chairs.
The pair were awarded a score of 28.5 out of 30.

Bedroom and walk-in robes
The sixth week of the season saw the five couples tackle another massive space on The Block – the bedroom and walk-in robes.
Steph and Gian ultimately won the week with a near-perfect room, scoring 29 out of 30 points.
But coming in second was Kristy and Brett, with the judges loving the ‘vibe’ of the space. Their only critiques were the lighting plan and the small bedside tables.
The pair were awarded a score of 25.5 out of 30.

Living and Dining Room
The fifth week of the season saw the five couples tackle living and dining room week – one of the biggest spaces on The Block.
Leah and Ash ultimately won the week with their bold, unique room.
The Stoke fireplace in the living room was a big winner with the judges who also applauded the functionality and floor plan of the space.
The pair were awarded a score of 25.5 out of 30.

Down Stairs Bathroom
The fourth week of the season saw the five couples tackle the downstairs bathroom and the competition was close, to say the least.
Leah and Ash ultimately won the week by a nail-biting half a point thanks to the use of their gnome which gave the couple an extra point. Kristy and Brett were close on their heels in second place.
The judges loved the glamorous room and amazing tiles Kristie and Brett chose this week. The only fault they noted was that there wasn’t any underfloor heating.
The pair were awarded a score of 27.5 out of 30.

Work From Home Space
The third week of the season saw the five couples tackle the work-from-home space and whilst all teams did finish, it was a race to the finish line as wet weather wreaked havoc.
In the end, week three saw Steph and Gian win for the second time in a row! Kyle and Leslie missed out on the top spot by only half a point which is amazing considering they only spent $13,917 in total.
The judges believed Kristy and Brett took the ‘work-from-home’ brief too literally and the space reminded them of a corporate office.
The pair were awarded a score of 24 out of 30.

Studio
The second week of the season saw the five couples tackle the granny flat, appropriately re-named the studio. With tense body corporate meetings, alliances forming and drama almost every day, the week was a big one and as judging commenced, it was clear that not every team followed the brief.
Although the judges loved the Velux skylights and the colour palette of the New York City Loft-inspired space, they had concerns about the layout and styling.
The pair were awarded a score of 21 out of 30.

Guest Bathroom
The first week of the season saw the five couples tackle one of the hardest rooms – the bathroom. From demolishing the wrong room, to hiring new builders and even allegations of cheating, the first official week on the Block was full of drama.
The team’s Moroccan themed bathroom received mixed feedback from the judges. Although it felt like a day spa, the execution led to it feeling a bit bland.
The pair were awarded a score of 21 out of 30.

House Decider Challenge
The debut episode of the season saw the five couples compete in a house decider challenge to decide which house they will get for the remainder of the season.
The challenge saw the teams given 48 hours and a budget of $5000 to create a kid’s room based on a Disney+ character.
Kristy and Brett’s Frozen-themed room came in close third, just half a point behind Eliza and Liberty. Whilst the judges applauded their creativity, they believed the South Australian team could have gone further.
The pair scored 18 out of 30.
