During Tuesday night’s Blind Auditions, the 31-year-old revealed the heartbreaking choice he had to make to pursue his passion.

Luke revealed that his father was a guitar player who quit music to join the church, bringing his son along with him.

“He moved to England to minister over there and I was raised in his assembly,” Luke explained

“I was raised in a very unusual setting. We believed that the end of the world was coming and we really felt a great duty to essentially save the world. That was our calling.”

Luke went on to explain that eventually his upbringing took a toll on him.

“When I got older, I realised I had all these very human impulses slowly chipping away at all those values I had grown up with,” he said.

“I felt quite ashamed of myself. I was told that I had to choose between a life of music or God.”

Luke made the difficult choice to pick music and admits he was subsequently banished from the church and forced to walk away from his family.

“I said goodbye to my parents, to my sisters – one of the hardest moments of my life,” he said.

And while it was tough to leave behind his world, he said that playing music in pubs and clubs meant that for the first time in his life he “felt of value”.

However, he confessed he would love to share his music career and journey on The Voice with his family.

“I’d love to have my parents here watching me because I love them,” he said.

“I’d love them to see value in something that I’m good at without feeling like it’s the thing that’s going to rob me of my soul. That’s a heavy burden to carry.”

For his Blind Audition,  Luke performed a cover of Matt Corby’s Resolution and ended up on Guy Sebastian’s team after Kelly Rowland controversially backed out despite turning her chair for him.
