You may have thought Mystic Falls, the Salvatore men and our infatuation with vampires was firmly in the past, but there’s been quite the chatter about our favourite nostalgic rewatch: The Vampire Diaries.

Despite ending after eight seasons in 2016, The Vampire Diaries has been on our minds lately after a number of strange coincidences that have left fans wondering if a reboot is in the works.

It all started in late November when fans were delighted to see that the original cast of The Vampire Diaries were still on good terms.

Nona Dobrev, Paul Wesley, Kat Graham, Candice King, Kayla Ewell, The Original’s Claire Holt and Michael Trevino all appeared in a short TikTok video on Nina’s TikTok account.

“🤫😉 #findmyiphone,” the actress, 34, captioned the video which saw the cast “pass the phone” to each other.

The video, which has amassed over 16 million views, sent fans into a frenzy and many began leaving comments asking if this digital reunion was proof the franchise had plans for the future.

“They’re all together…I’m telling u something [is] happening,” replied one comment. “OMG What does this mean,” commented another.

Just days later, Nina sent fans into even more of a frenzy when she posted a fit check to her account….filmed in Mystic Falls.

She also shared another video, where she revisited a number of locations in the town where the show was filmed.

With not one but three Vampire Diaries-related videos, fans are certain *something* is coming, but at this stage, we’re not quite sure what it actually is. Could it be a cast reunion? A new spinoff series? A reboot? We’ll have to wait a bit longer to find out.

It’s not the first time The Vampire Diaries cast have been subjected to such rumours. Earlier this year, Paul Wesley broke fans’ hearts when revealing he had no plans to return to his iconic role as Stefan.

When asked about the opportunity to return to the CW drama series alongside Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder, the actor told InStyle Magazine that it would be a “hard pass” for him.

“I would never do another vampire anything, period,” Wesley said, “let alone Vampire Diaries.”

“I don’t really miss anything about playing him, and I don’t mean that in a [negative way],” he continued. “Eight years is a long time, and I’m so glad to put that to rest. Eight seasons.”

“But I loved how dynamic he was. Because the show ran for such a long time, in order for it to not become monotonous, every season, he sort of had a different arc. At one point he was pure evil, and he started out as the good guy and then he ended as the good guy. But I liked the challenge of trying to keep the character fresh.”

Why was The Vampire Diaries cancelled?

The Vampire Diaries premiered in 2009 and ended in 2017 after eight seasons.

Nina Dobrev, who played Elena, departed from the iconic show after season six. “I don’t want to play a teenager anymore,” she told Harper’s Bazaar. “I want to play adult roles and be challenged and work with great filmmakers and tell incredible stories and that has meant being really picky.”

Following her departure, ratings began to decline for The Vampire Series, but showrunner Jule Plec later confirmed that they weren’t forced to cancel.

“There were a lot of things that went into [the decision to end the series],” they told THR. “Some logistics, some contractual, where you were just like, ‘OK, if this person doesn’t come back, is the show still going to be good? What if they do come back, but we don’t know until the end?’ A lot of that silly stuff you’re not supposed to talk about. Logistical stuff.”
